Manchester United teenager Jack Fletcher has been handed a six-game suspension after directing a homophobic slur at a Barnsley opponent during the club’s 5-2 EFL Trophy defeat last October.
The incident unfolded in the 62nd minute after Fletcher had been subjected to two off-the-ball fouls, including being stamped on the Achilles.
Following Barnsley’s third goal, the unnamed opponent made jibing comments to Fletcher about both his father Darren and his twin brother Tyler, prompting the United youngster to respond with homophobic term ‘gay boy’ directed at the Barnsley player.
Referee Will Davis, positioned just a yard away, clearly heard the exchange and issued a straight red card.
An FA panel ultimately determined the language was intended to be derogatory rather than a deliberate homophobic insult.
Fletcher admitted the charge and elected a paper hearing. He accepted the FA charge for using an insulting term which included a reference, whether express or implied, to sexual orientation.
Alongside the ban, he was fined £1,500 and must complete a mandatory face-to-face education programme, with Manchester United working internally with the player to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language.
Fletcher has made three first-team appearances this season, with his twin brother Tyler also having featured for the senior side.
Both joined United from Manchester City in 2023, with their father Darren currently serving as Under-18s manager at the club.

The FA (charge statement):
“It is alleged that during the fixture, you acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words, contrary to FA Rule E3.1. It is alleged that the breach of FA Rule E3.1 is an ‘Aggravated Breach’, as defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to sexual orientation.”
Jack Fletcher (via manutd.com):
“I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used in the heat of the moment. Despite the fact that I had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult, I completely understand that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game. I want to be clear that this momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values.”
Manchester United (official club statement via manutd.com):
“Manchester United has worked with Jack to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language and why it is harmful. In addition to his ongoing participation in regular academy programmes on diversity and inclusion, Jack will also take part in educational training through the FA. Manchester United prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming club. Since launching All Red All Equal in 2016, we have embedded equality, diversity and inclusion into everything we do.”
Rainbow Devils (Manchester United’s official LGBTQ+ supporters’ club):
“Homophobic language has no place in football or society, regardless of intention or connotation. Words matter and words hurt. Football must be for everyone to feel safe and included. Education, meaningful consequences and a genuine commitment to learning from mistakes are key to ensuring incidents like this become an opportunity for growth and change. Parents, teachers, football clubs and all of us have a responsibility to young people to teach them right and wrong in regards to all forms of discrimination. We hope Jack learns from this and grows as a person and a player. His immediate regret and guilty plea suggests that he will.”

Fans react to Jack Fletcher being handed a six-game ban over homophobic slur –
@Eyeincognito1 Benfica player 1 match ban despite not been found guilty of any offence. Jack Fletcher 6 match ban just for calling someone gay boy. Mental.
@DiminishdRtrn Rattled and immature, not the hallmarks of a United player. Let’s hope he learns his lesson and develops his character.
@goosemtown would be 10 games in Northern Ireland plus the 2 for the red card
@PoGoFanatic1985 World’s gone soft, they wouldn’t handle CoD from years back now
@LucasDeLucas serves him right
@Utd_doom Yeah so people condemn racism but cry over a player getting suspended for homophobia? They’re both under the same law and have the same ban
@bbeeeeeeeeeenn Same people crying he got a ban would be crying if he said something racist
@nkoopman01 Apparently what he’s said was: “You seem to know a lot about me, are you a gay boy?” How does that warrant a suspension?
@mitch_kawasaki Keeping homophobia alive 👍🤦♂️
@Jayb_law If the boy is actually a gay, Fletcher should be apologized to
@FcKopite_LFC What happened to being brought up on “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”
@BrewCrewMagpie That’s softer than the red and pen in the Palace game last weekend
@omwonyole the boy apologized, got his ban to teach him a lesson about fafo. those moaning in the comments should know their cries are inconsequential
@sisumegistus Calling someone happy shouldn’t be an offence.
@WmCMaclean1941 …….and must attend a mandatory face-to-face education programme or face further suspension until it is completed. 🙄🤦🏻♂️🥱
