For years, Premier League supporters have built a reputation for believing their league sits comfortably above the rest of Europe.
From television revenue to global popularity, English football often markets itself as the strongest competition in the world when compared with La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1.
That arrogance took a serious beating across the 10th and 11th of March 2026, when all six Premier League clubs competing in the UCL Round of 16 first legs failed to win a single game.
The most spectacular collapse of the two evenings arrived at the Estadio Metropolitano on Tuesday, where Tottenham were beaten 5-2 by Atletico Madrid.
Manager Igor Tudor gambled by starting Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who had made just two Carabao Cup starts all season and had never played a minute in the Champions League for Spurs.
The gamble failed in the most spectacular fashion imaginable as Atletico had scored three goals against Tottenham in just under 15 minutes, the earliest any side has ever led 3-0 in a UCL knockout match.
Kinsky was hauled off in the 17th minute after two errors that directly led to goals.
Liverpool’s night in Istanbul was less humiliating but still grim. Galatasaray won 1-0, with Victor Osimhen influencing the tie to give the Turkish side a slender advantage heading into the second leg at Anfield.
Newcastle presented a tough test at St James’ Park, drawing 1-1 with Barcelona.
Arsenal travelled to Leverkusen and drew 1-1 at the BayArena, a result that keeps the tie open but left questions about whether Mikel Arteta’s side have the attacking threat to finish the job in north London the following week.
At the Santiago Bernabeu, Manchester City were torn apart by a Federico Valverde performance that belonged in a different stratosphere.
Valverde scored three times in the first half, becoming the first Uruguayan to score a Champions League hat-trick, completing his treble three minutes before the break with a volley that drew genuine awe from the Bernabeu crowd.
At the Parc des Princes, Chelsea twice came from behind to level, with Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernandez both scoring, but a howler from goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen unravelled everything.
His attempted pass from the back was intercepted by Bradley Barcola, who found Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Vitinha lobbed the stranded keeper for 3-2. Substitute Kvaratskhelia then curled in a brilliant fourth and tapped in a fifth in stoppage time.
Only four teams from 51 have ever overturned a first-leg deficit of three goals or more in the Champions League knockout rounds.
Within hours, football Twitter was filled with memes mocking the hype around the Premier League. Here are the best 7 –
