Mikel Arteta Removing Coat Becomes Viral ‘Locked In’ Moment vs Everton
Mikel Arteta’s title charge has reached its most electric phase.
Arsenal sit first in the Premier League with 70 points from 31 matches, winning 21, drawing seven, and losing just three.
After years of near-misses, finishing runners-up to Manchester City twice before losing out to Liverpool, this is the season the Gunners are refusing to let slip.
The 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday was another significant step toward a first league title in 22 years.
It was a tense night at the Emirates, and Arteta wore every minute of it on his body.
As the match remained goalless deep into the second half, the Arsenal manager was spotted removing his coat on the touchline in the 81st minute, a moment that quickly went viral.
The gesture captured the raw intensity of a manager who was, in the words of social media, fully locked in.
“Locked in” has its roots in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and has been in use since at least 2009.
It reached meme status in 2023 on Instagram and other image-heavy social media platforms, typically used to describe the act of becoming uber-focused, zoning in so completely that all distractions fall away.
Arteta stripping off his coat with nine minutes to play, visibly locking into the game’s final moments, was the living embodiment of the phrase.
The drama that followed justified every bit of that intensity. Viktor Gyokeres broke Everton’s resistance, and then 16-year-old Max Dowman completed a balletic charge the length of the pitch, rolling the ball into an empty net to send the Emirates into delirium.
Arsenal’s next fixture is the Champions League second leg against Bayer Leverkusen at home, with the tie perfectly poised after a 1-1 draw in Germany.
Arteta will need to lock in all over again.
He locked in differently 😂😂❤️❤️

Arteta on the match atmosphere and his players’ conviction: “We talked before the game to play with that relentless desire to win every action and have the conviction that we are going to find a way to do it, and the effort, the quality, the commitment of the players was sensational, and then it ended up in a manner that probably none of us expected. It was one of the best moments that we lived together at the Emirates.”
Arteta on what he told Dowman before sending him on: “Go and do your thing and win us the game… I said these are the moments in the season when something special has to happen, and he knows he has the ability, which I have to give him the opportunity, and he will deliver.”
Arteta on the gut feeling to bring on Dowman: “Probably in my head I had a gut feeling.”
Arteta on Dowman’s goal: “Yeah, it was a great moment, especially the way the goal was built up, and we had like 10-15 seconds to really enjoy it. We knew the goal was about to happen, and it was magical, all the bench and all the players together, jumping off into the crowd. It was a beautiful day.”
Arteta on the late heroics: “It was unbelievable. With all the time we invested and the effort, all of the commitment we put to the passion to this incredible game called football, to experience these moments with the crowd, the staff, the players — the joy in their eyes is special.”
Arteta on his side’s belief and the finishers: “When we talk about belief and conviction and trying and going and going and being mature and being composed in the moment, it’s a really difficult thing to do. I’m really proud of them, the ones that started, the finishers that again made such an impact to help us to win the game, and all the staff and players that were on the bench, living the game with us in that incredible way. It was beautiful.”
Everton manager David Moyes on Arteta: “We’ve got some unbelievable managers, and Mikel is one of them, who have come into this country and shown us what they can do. Maybe they can’t stay with it and do it all the time; Mikel has been able to evolve his team and move it on.”
