Southampton’s season was supposed to be about recovery after the humiliation of relegation from the Premier League last year, accumulating just 12 points, 1 more than the lowest ever count in Premier League history, set by Derby County at 11 points.
The club have spent this campaign trying to turn embarrassment into an immediate return. Now, just as they stand one match from Wembley glory, their play-off push has been dragged into one of the strangest controversies of the season.
The Saints beat Middlesbrough 2-1 after extra time in the Championship play-off semi-final second leg, setting up a final against Hull. But the result has been overshadowed by allegations that someone connected to Southampton was caught watching Boro’s training session before the tie.
The EFL has charged the club over an alleged breach of rules that prohibit teams from observing opponents’ training within 72 hours of a match, with the case going before an independent disciplinary commission.
For Middlesbrough, the issue is serious. Their play-off campaign ended painfully, but the complaint has left a strange cloud hanging over the result.
Boro are reportedly continuing to prepare in case the disciplinary process somehow opens the door to them being reinstated for the final.
Reports claimed the individual also had professional equipment capable of picking up voices from the training session.
While this is a serious issue for the disciplinary commission to solve, the internet seems to be amused by something else.
A photo emerged of the alleged spy-gate, which caught everyone’s attention.

Rather than some high-tech operation involving drones, hidden cameras or carefully planned surveillance, the image appears to show a lone figure standing by a tree, phone raised, in a position that looks almost comically exposed. He is not buried in bushes or camouflaged in the distance.
He appears to be upright, visible and using the tree as cover in the most casual possible sense. It looks less like elite tactical intelligence gathering and more like someone playing hide-and-seek who forgot the “hide” part.
Social media reacted accordingly. One user joked that if the Kremlin had access to “sophisticated spying technology” of this level, Western democracies would be in serious trouble.
If the Kremlin had access to this kind of sophisticated spying technology, western democracies would be in tatters within days. https://t.co/fDHQegdgwS

While some made fun of the plain ‘disguise’ and hiding spot.
Hahaha, cracked me up this. Not even hiding in a bush or anything.

Not the best disguise 🥸 https://t.co/RmASTZuYvl

Others mocked the amateurishness of the scene, comparing it to the ‘Shaq-hiding behind a tree’ meme and joking that he was just lost on his way around the park, also noticing that he does not even have the latest iPhone.

Not even the newest iPhone. Just looks like some kid who’s wondered off the golf course 😭

The jokes have kept coming. What was reported as professional equipment was just an iPhone, AirPods, and a WiFi connection.
I hear MI6 is shaking right now. A man. A tree. A 5G connection. Truly the pinnacle of modern espionage https://t.co/fEcDdtcr9C

Fans did not stop at social media, they took it to the stadium as well, showing up in ghillie suits and wearing twigs as a disguise to make fun of this alleged spy-gate.
The identity of the alleged spy surfaced after the image had done its rounds.
Reports named him as William Salt, a Southampton performance-analysis intern, allegedly sent to observe or film Middlesbrough’s session at Rockliffe Hall before the semi-final.
A paper trail was also caught when his credit card had been used to get a coffee at the golf club across the street.
Football, of course, has been here before with the infamous Leeds United’s 2019 “Spygate”.
Marcelo Bielsa admitted sending someone to watch Frank Lampard‘s Derby County train before a Championship match, prompting an EFL investigation and a £200,000 fine for the club.
But while Leeds’ case became infamous because of Bielsa’s unapologetic explanation of his methods, Southampton’s has gone viral for something much simpler: how painfully visible it all appeared to be.
For Middlesbrough, the complaint remains a live issue with potentially serious consequences. For Southampton, it is an unwanted distraction at the worst possible moment.
Southampton have come out with the statement that the intern acted alone, hoping that it helps their case and that they may still get to complete their post-relegation comeback at Wembley.
