Fans Feel Betrayed After Erling Haaland Links Up With Mr Beast

The internet’s sudden obsession with Erling Haaland hanging out with YouTube titan MrBeast exemplifies a strange intersection of modern sports culture and digital influencer politics.

When the Manchester City forward posted an unexpected photo with the caption “2 YouTubers,” it sparked a heated online debate, highlighted by a massive wave of highly critical fan comments.

While some viewers saw the crossover as a fun, unexpected piece of pop culture trivia, the majority of the internet reacted negatively. Much of the immediate backlash is due to a growing collective fatigue with mega-influencer pairings that feel overly commercialized, forced, and completely disconnected from the true essence of professional football.

However, the criticism quickly shifted into much deeper, darker territory as a result of the severe public controversies surrounding Jimmy Donaldson in recent years. As serious allegations of workplace misconduct, safety concerns about his upcoming Amazon production, and deceptive business practices harmed his brand, football fans became defensive of Haaland’s pristine public image.

They loudly questioned how a world-class athlete could be so unconcerned about these serious scandals, shouting,

This is NOT what the people want to see.

Fans reacted negatively to the unexpected pairing with insulting Haaland,

Did that haircut shave off some of his neurons.

And some fans commented the player to get away from Mr. Beast,

GET AWAY FROM HIM.

In contrast, many protective fans jumped in to defend the footballer’s integrity, theorizing as he simply operates within an isolated athletic bubble.

This disappointment was only exacerbated when the duo released their collaboration video, which featured Haaland and MrBeast attempting to recreate a viral internet video of Haaland being terrified by his own reflection in a mirror.

Rather than finding it amusing, fans saw it as a way to ruin a good joke by incorporating MrBeast into that masterclass meme, which was beloved by all football fans to this day, demonstrating that inserting a controversial influencer immediately drained the organic humor out of a popular football meme.

Aside from these corporate scandals, the commentary frequently targets MrBeast’s physical appearance in the photo, particularly highlighting the widespread internet meme about his seemingly ‘dead eyes’ and a robotic smile that makes fans say,

You can tell who hasn’t sold their soul just from this picture alone.

To the human eye, his unnatural facial expression elicits a strong psychological uncanny valley response. This happens because he frequently uses a non-Duchenne smile, which is an expression in which the mouth forms a massive grin but the upper muscles surrounding the eyes remain completely static, giving the impression of insincerity and artificiality.

Furthermore, years of hyper-editing YouTube thumbnails, artificially widening his mouth, and using oversaturated lighting filters have removed the natural micro-expressions that make a human face appear truly alive. Interestingly, there is a distinct physiological reality to this phenomenon, which many critics overlook.

Donaldson has publicly stated that he is nearly blind in his right eye due to severe astigmatism. To focus on a camera lens while wearing contacts, he must squint and tense his ocular muscles, resulting in his eyes appearing uneven and blank.

Longtime viewers see this visual shift as a literal symptom of corporate burnout. MrBeast famously transformed from a casual teenager filming videos with friends to the stressed CEO of a multibillion-dollar company, and his permanent, rigid smile appears to be the exhausting facade of corporate obligations rather than genuine joy.

As a result, the viral photo creates a stark visual contrast. On one side, Haaland appears to be an oblivious, regular athlete taking part in a standard marketing stunt. On the other side, MrBeast represents a hyper-optimized digital entity whose calculated esthetic alienates traditional sports fans.

Finally, the internet’s dissatisfaction reflects a broader concern about corporate colonization of sports, in which genuine athletic icons are drawn into the manufactured, exhausting vortex of international influencer marketing.
