From Commentators to Scoreboard: The fake goal that fooled everyone during Roma v Inter

AS Roma’s woes continued as they suffered yet another defeat against Inter at home, having now amassed four defeats in six league games.

Mourinho found his team trailing 3-0 against his former team after just 45 minutes in yet another disconcerting display that encapsulates the team’s worrying run of form.

With only 10 minutes to go and a comeback more or less unattainable, an incident involving Nicolo Zaniolo managed to put some respite to the embarrassing scoreline, or so people thought.

Charging into the opponent’s goal, Zaniolo’s fierce effort from just outside the box hit the side netting. But the ball ricocheted off the net and dropped back onto the field, giving it the appearance of a brilliant long-range strike.

The ‘fake goal’ was convincing enough for one particular broadcaster that he went all out and gave an extended declaration of ‘gooooal.’

Moreover, the scoreboard was soon adjusted so as to show AS Roma with 1 goal.

Zaniolo himself appeared wary of the missed shot, showing no signs of reaction whatsoever. In fact, other players, with the exception of Inter’s Brozovic, gave no reactions as well.

Replays show Marcelo Brozovic throwing both his hands up in frustration, suggesting that he, too, was fooled into thinking that Zaniola had found the net.

However, the funny misunderstanding was worked out later, and the scoreline remained 3-0 in Inter’s favour at full time.

Roma are now 13 points behind league leaders AC Milan. This latest defeat at Stadio Olimpico was Mourinho’s second home defeat as a manager of the capital club.
