Joining Shankly and Klopp: Slot’s Path to Liverpool’s Mount Rushmore Banner

Arne Slot, Liverpool

Liverpool has a long history of legendary managers—Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Kenny Dalglish, Jürgen Klopp, and so on. These are the men who have shaped Liverpool into what it is today.

These are the faces you put on a banner and hold high in the stands.

And guess what? That’s already a thing.

A legendary Liverpool banner, updated over the years, is maintained by a community on X called Irish_Kop.

So naturally, someone on X asked:

“When will Arne Slot be added to the banner?”

And that sparked a debate:

Some said a manager must have a European trophy to make it. Others argued a league title should be enough. A few believed being memorable and beloved by fans should do it.

But that’s only half the story.

The Real Criteria Lies in History

You see, Liverpool as a city has always been left-wing, socialist-leaning, with strong labor movements.

The club’s fan culture, anthem (“You’ll Never Walk Alone”), and overall philosophy are built on unity and collective strength.

And almost all of Liverpool’s greatest managers shared these values.

Bill Shankly, the club’s most iconic figure, was an outspoken socialist.

He famously said:

“The socialism I believe in is everybody working for each other, everyone having a share of the rewards. It’s the way I see football, the way I see life.”

Bob Paisley, though less vocal, came from a working-class mining background.

Kenny Dalglish may not have spoken politics, but his actions after Hillsborough—standing by the victims’ families and opposing the authorities—were rooted in socialist values.

Jürgen Klopp?

He’s cut from the same cloth—a man of the people, always prioritizing unity over individual glory.

So, Will Arne Slot Make It to the Banner?

Of course, he can.

The banner started from something political that was in line with the city’s belief. But over time, it has shifted from those origins.

So now, Slot doesn’t need to be socialist to be on it. Winning silverware should be credible enough!

A few trophies, and we can expect another face to be added!
