Which Mystery Language is Brennan Johnson Learning on Duolingo?

Brennan Johnson, Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham’s Brennan Johnson has fans excited—not just for his recent goals but for a curious Instagram post.

After Spurs’ 1-0 Europa League second leg win over Eintracht Frankfurt, the winger dropped an Insta-dump to mark the occasion.

Amid the numerous photos of his life, what got fans curious was a screenshot of his 100-day Duolingo streak, making fans wonder what language he’s learning.

Johnson joined Spurs from Nottingham Forest in September 2023 for £47.5 million. The 23-year-old Welsh star, known for his speed, debuted in a 2-1 win over Sheffield United and quickly became a regular.

Last season, he scored five goals and got ten assists in 34 games, matching the team’s top assist count. But his form was shaky, and his high price tag brought criticism.

This season, Spurs have struggled, sitting 14th in the Premier League. Johnson faced fan anger after a 1-0 loss to Arsenal in September 2024, even quitting social media due to abuse.

But he’s bounced back, scoring two goals and adding two assists in his last two Premier League matches, including a brace in a 3-1 win over Southampton. Fans now adore him, with TalkTHFC tweeting, “Brennan Johnson is one of my favourite footballers at the minute.”

The Duolingo screenshot in his post-Frankfurt post got fans talking. Johnson once mentioned learning French, and his frustrations with Duolingo in an interview with GQ back in March 2024 –

“It’s so repetitive. Like, yeah — match the words to the gaps in the sentence. I know that. I know how to do a puzzle, but I’m trying to learn a language here.”

But this streak seems new.

Many think he’s studying Danish because of his girlfriend, Tilde Cilla Syah, a model working in England. The couple have been together since at least February 2025.

Others guess Spanish, since he is supposedly best friends with some of the Spanish-speaking Spurs players like Pedro Porro, Rodrigo Bentancur and Cristian Romero.

People were quick to note his Welsh heritage –

Some jokingly suggest Chinese or Arabic, teasing his earlier bad form by saying he was ready for a transfer to China or Saudi Arabia.

Whether it’s Danish, Spanish, or another language, Johnson’s Duolingo streak shows his effort, like his recent goals. As Spurs prepare for their Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt, fans are cheering their revived winger, loving his comeback and chuckling over his language puzzle. Whatever he’s learning, Johnson’s proving he’s more than a footballer—one streak at a time.
