The Context Behind Harvey Elliott’s 3-0 Taunt At Richarlison

Amid all the joyous title-winning celebrations, one might have missed the fiery exchange between Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott and Tottenham’s Richarlison at Anfield today.

The incident unfolded after a heated sequence in stoppage time.

Elliott, who had come off the bench, was jokingly dawdling to waste time as Liverpool cruised to victory. Richarlison, visibly frustrated, clipped Elliott’s heels with a petulant challenge. Elliott retaliated by shoving the Brazilian striker before flashing a “3-0” gesture directly at him.

Elliott’s cheeky “3-0” taunt—forming a three with his left hand and a zero with his right—left fans puzzled, as the scoreline was 5-1.

The taunt, it was later revealed, was a sly dig at Richarlison’s former club Everton, mocking their 30-year trophy drought since their last triumph in 1995, when they won the FA Cup by beating Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Curtis Jones, who was trying to hold Elliott back, also couldn’t help but smile seeing as he was the only local lad in this scuffle.

The game itself was a one-sided affair. Tottenham took an early lead through Dominic Solanke’s 12th-minute strike, but Liverpool roared back with goals from Diaz, Mac Allister, Gakpo, Salah and a Destiny Udogie own goal.

Elliott’s late cameo, capped by the viral moment, only added to the Reds’ dominance.
