Alvaro Carreras, the 22 year-old Spanish left back, joined Real Madrid from Benfica in the summer of 2025 for a reported fee of €50 million.
Real Madrid were in desperate search for a left-back since Ferland Mendy’s injury issues had started to become very frequent and evident.
As usual, Madrid doesn’t wait for players to reach their full potential or until they become extremely costly in terms of their transfer fee. Before Carreras reaches his best, they have already acquired him.
Real Madrid’s investment in Alvaro Carreras has already paid off this season. Despite his young age, he has quietly emerged as one of the team’s surprise performers, putting on composed, mature left-back performances.
In addition to his strong defence, he has made contributions with clever overlapping runs and forward-moving passes. Carreras even appeared to be the most assured wide outlet on the field in a few games, particularly in his early La Liga appearances.
He got his debut goal for the Galacticos on Saturday which saw them comprehensively beat Valencia 4-0. He was joined by Kylian Mbappe, who scored a brace and Jude Bellingham on the scoresheet.

Now, here is a twist in the tale.
Now when his days at Madrid have come into a bit of a fruition, Manchester United fans on social media are surprised to know that he was their academy player and never got a chance to feature for the senior team.
With the likes of Patrick Dorgu and the 18 year old Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, who doesn’t seem to get a lot of minutes for the first team, Manchester United fans would surely be thinking that perhaps, it was a terrible idea to sell the now 22 year-old Spaniard.

Carreras was never touted as a “Manchester United wonderkid.” He was not so known on social media for the die hard Manchester United fans. He was also never doing viral goals or skills for the academy.
Because all his development happened away from Old Trafford — very quietly — United fans simply never built a connection with him.
At sixteen, Carreras left Deportivo La Coruña to join Manchester United’s academy. Unlike Garnacho or Mainoo, he came through their youth setup discreetly and without any notice. He also never made an official senior debut, in contrast to the others.
He lived his entire Manchester United career through loan spells:
- Preston North End (2022–23)
- Granada (early 2023–24 season)
- Benfica (late 2023–24 season)
He was in the same age category as Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, Willy Kambwala, and Hannibal Mejbri — but unlike them, Carreras never got that one unique moment where Ten Hag put him into the matchday squad as a substitute to “announce” himself to the supporters at the Theatre of Dreams.
For him, the loan at Benfica was the turning point. Carreras’ confidence rapidly grew because Portugal is known for producing modern ball-playing defenders and full-backs. His crossing improved, his attacking involvement matured, and he became more aggressive in winning duels. And, as a result of this, Benfica decided to make his loan move permanent from Manchester United for a reported fee of €6 million.

This is the modern football world — if a player is not constantly visible to the fans, people assume he does not exist. Carreras is at a point in his career where he has the potential to surprise many people, especially the Manchester United fans. He possesses the potential to become Madrid’s desired modern offensive left-back, particularly in the long run following Mendy’s era.

Manchester United will reflect on this transfer and wonder if they could have used or developed him more effectively.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, may have just acquired another young talent – discreetly, effectively, and beneath the radar.
And, yes—the funniest bit remains: The player who was previously invisible at United is now visible across Spain and Europe.
