Did Aston Villa Put Their European Cup in the Tunnel to Taunt Arsenal? Here’s The Truth

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Champions League, Premier League

The 25/26 Premier League season has already produced some entertaining games, with Arsenal’s visit to Villa Park last weekend being the latest addition to the list.

The home side took the lead thanks to Matty Cash’s opener in the first-half. The Gunners responded quickly after the break, through super-sub Leandro Trossard.

Mikel Arteta’s team mounted the pressure on the Villans but all for it to go to vain as Emiliano Buendia scored in the final minute of stoppage-time, snatching all three points for his team.

Ahead of kick-off, a pitch side video released by Villa showcased the 1982 UEFA Champions League (formerly UEFA European Cup) trophy is placed in the middle of the players’ walk-out tunnel.

Many speculated that it was a strategy to taunt the Gunners with psychological warfare due to their lack of European success.

It was later revealed that the trophy is always on display during home games at Villa Park in the same tunnel.

The reason as to why the trophy is always on display, takes us back to the days of Christian Purslow, the former CEO of the club.

Purslow was appointed as the CEO in 2018, soon after the club was taken over by new ownership.

At the end of the 2018/19 season, Villa won the Championship play-off final and secured promotion to the Premier League.

During his tenure, Aston Villa began work on a major redevelopment of Villa Park which included planning for expanding the stadium to raise capacity and modernise the ground.

The academy structure as well as the women’s side of the club was also brought up to speed and saw redevelopments to achieve a competitive identity across all levels.

After stepping down as CEO in 2023, club statements from owners credited him for transforming Villa “on and off the pitch,” citing promotion, infrastructure, academy, women’s team, and a re-established top-flight status.

His early work in bringing Aston Villa back to the Premier League and re-shaping their image as a competitive club has led Unai Emery’s current side are in a dominant position across the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League as they sit in third position in both competitions.

They sit just 3 points off of league leaders Arsenal and 1 point off of Pep Guardiola’s second-placed Manchester City.

The hopes for silverware to be displayed at Villa Park remain high as a commanding run in the second-tier of European football sees them level on points with league leaders Lyon, but separated by goals difference.

Their ongoing involvement in the League Cup and the FA Cup also sees them in contention for potential domestic success, their first in 30 years.
