Fans Fall More in Love With Rayan Cherki After Broken English Interview

Manchester City, Premier League, Rayan Cherki, TNT Sports

Rayan Cherki has quickly become the difference maker for Manchester City, delivering 7 open-play assists since the start of November, more than double that of any other player during that time.

However, if there is one thing that the talented Frenchman hasn’t delivered on yet, then it is definitely his English speaking skills.

Cherki was interviewed by Jules Breach of TNT Sports after yet another scintillating performance this weekend, as his goal and assist helped earn his side a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest, making it 8 wins in a row.

During the interview, the Man City number 10 was asked a couple of questions, and each time he repeated, “You know the championship is so long”.

In fact, in one of the instances, Cherki was asked about how consistently starting games has helped his rhythm. To that, he initially asked the reporter to repeat the question and despite the repetition, he still ended up answering with something that was totally off topic, yet again talking about how “the championship is so long”.

Reporter: Congratulations Rayan, we can see from the celebrations what this win means to you but how hard did you have to work for it?

Cherki: Today, it’s a big win. When we come here, you know the game is the war. Today I’m part of the team because the game is very complicated to win. I’m very proud.

Reporter: What a hit for the winner scored by you as well. Talk us through that goal.

Cherki: Sorry?

Reporter: What a hit for the winner. Talk us through your goal.

Cherki: Ah yeah. Yeah, it’s is good for the team because the game is not simple. I’m very proud for my team because the Championship is so long now. Come with the team and enjoy.

Reporter: You did Haaland’s celebration as well.

Cherki: Yeah, all the week we speak with Haaland for when you score, you do this celebration. I’m very happy.

Reporter: You’ve had four Premier League starts in a row now. How much has that consistency helped with your rhythm?

Cherki: Sorry?

Reporter: How much has playing so many games in a row, starting four Premier League matches in a row helped with your rhythm on the pitch?

Cherki: You know, when the game come, we, we need just one thing, win the game and take the point because the Championship is so hard and today is a big win.

Reporter: Well, you are top of the Premier League table now. How does that feel to be top and get Arsenal to come and chase you down?

Cherki: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you know the Championship is so long now. The next game is very important for us and uh we are ready.

Reporter: Well, well done today. You are today’s player of the match. Congratulations.

Cherki: Thank you so much. Thank you.

Despite the awkward interview, Manchester City fans were quick to defend their player, praising him for the strides he has made in learning English while criticizing the reporter for not making it easy for Cherki to understand and answer questions.

@GoneStarFr: It makes me laugh, he doesn’t answer the questions at all, he just calmly rattles off his three or four sentences. We love you, Rayan.

@Okokcoolx: The journalist is so difficult! Doesn’t she see he’s struggling? She repeats herself really fast and doesn’t use simple words.

@AddMyOf: He reminds me of Aguero where he would understand maybe two words out of the sentence and just reply w something vaguely related, smile and nod. Foreign players that half understand the English language are my favorite archetype.

@MouradKent: She’s not making it easy at all. She’s talking to a foreigner with a basic level of English and asking him technical questions with a local accent, lol.

@KyrieSr972: That’s a huge improvement on his part, especially considering how difficult it is to understand the English at first.

@Caramelo__924: PTTDDRRRRRRRR I SWEAR HE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND THE QUESTIONS

@Smzeal1: You guys should always bring someone that can assist him with interpreting his word properly for better expression of his thoughts. He’s struggling

@_0xjo: Some people teased him because he struggled with his broken English when he first arrived. But look at Bz’s progress in 6 months thanks to practice.

@Lennoxx78: I recognize a guy who doesn’t understand anything, I love him

@MrFondjo: She knows he doesn’t speak very well, but she’s still asking a lot of questions.

@rodrisonfire_16: she spoke way too fast for his French brain to comprehend both times so he just rounded off to the nearest thing he thought she was asking

@Footy__1: Made to ball not to talk

@_fodenthefoat_47: It seems like the French don’t get taught english as much as dutch or the germans do

@M1RMAZ01B: Hopefully bro is getting some English lessons in. He can speak the language, clearly, but he doesn’t seem to understand it. Which is a very strange outcome.

@1cornishblue: Not surprising as it was not an easy question for someone speaking in their second language. She didn’t even try to simplify it when it was clear he had no idea what she was asking

@unrelatxd: Doesn’t know English much yet, but he already answered on the pitch

@crypto_lfstyle: English is his second language so he is doing well. Plus there was a lot of noise in the stadium. Remember he just moved to England. It takes a while to understand and become comfortable speaking a new language. I speak 3 languages, it takes time!
