FC Bayern Munich find themselves in a tricky situation as club captain Manuel Neuer is set to be sidelined for a considerable spell. The veteran goalkeeper had to be subbed off at half-time following a calf injury as the Bavarians secured a 3-0 win over Werder Bremen.
Even as he approaches 40, Neuer has kept up a high standard. So far this season, he has already kept 9 clean sheets in 28 appearances. Bayern are undoubtedly going to miss their captain as they go about the business end of the season.
In fact, the German international has been an undisputed starter at Bayern Munich for more than a decade. He overcame a serious injury from a skiing accident in late 2022 and worked his way back into the team by late 2023. Ever since, he’s maintained his consistency, which prompted the club to offer him a contract extension to stay through the 2025/26 season.
Neuer, nearing four decades of life at the top level, laid it all bare in a recent interview with L’Équipe. As he was asked how he wants to be remembered, the legendary goalkeeper was ever-so-humble. “I hope people will say that I was a good goalkeeper”, he said.
The football fraternity on X (formerly Twitter) was naturally shocked by the quote. What he said almost sounded like a gentle plea for future fans to remember him kindly. Fans had to quickly jump in to remind him of his stature and legacy as a footballer.

Does he know when a keeper makes a ridiculous save or has an unbelievable game the saying is ‘ he turned into prime Neuer’. https://t.co/aGifOdC7f0

In the same interview, Neuer shared that he didn’t actually choose to become a goalkeeper. When he joined the youth team at Schalke, the coach put him in that position since the team didn’t have a goalkeeper.
Surprisingly enough, for someone who didn’t want to become a goalkeeper, Neuer’s CV is simply out of this world. He’s one of the most decorated footballers in the history of the game, boasting 12 Bundesliga and 2 Champions Leagues among others at the club level. The 39-year-old had even led his nation to their fourth World Cup title back in 2014.
Besides his team accolades, the “GOAT keeper” has achieved his fair share of individual honours. He was named IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper and made the FIFA FIFPro World XI four times each. He also won the Golden Glove at the 2014 World Cup and finished third on the Ballon d’Or podium that same year. He was even named IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper of the Decade (2011-2020).
Manuel Neuer may have simply been trying to be humble by underselling himself, but his achievements and influence tell a different story. As far as the future generation of football fans is concerned, the German legend will definitely find himself in the Hall of Fame as arguably the greatest keeper the game has ever seen.
