Everton 2-0 Burnley: Bramley-Moore Erupts as Liverpool Lose on Same Night

Everton, Liverpool, Matchgoing Fans, Premier League, Wolves

Everton supporters were in jubilant mood at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Tuesday night, celebrating both a home victory and Liverpool’s stunning defeat.

The Toffees beat relegation-threatened Burnley 2-0 in front of 51,959 fans at their Bramley-Moore Dock home. The win moved David Moyes’ side to 40 points and eighth place in the Premier League table.

Just past the half-hour mark, centre-back James Tarkowski planted a header from James Garner’s deep free-kick to score from Everton’s first shot on target.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall then doubled the lead with a composed dink after being teed up by Iliman Ndiaye, his sixth league goal of the season.

Speaking to TNT Sports post-match, Dewsbury-Hall noticed the celebrations had taken on a new dimension, acknowledging that the Wolves result had sent Everton supporters into a frenzy inside and outside the stadium.

Scenes of jubilation were not limited to the Hill Dickinson’s concourses.

Fans gathered at the Dock Wall pub nearby also erupted when news of Liverpool’s defeat to Wolves filtered through.

Even former Everton striker Oumar Niasse joined in on social media, posting on his Instagram story with the tongue-in-cheek message: “Stop it Wolves.”

Jordan Pickford made a fine stoppage-time reaction save to deny Lyle Foster and preserve the clean sheet.

As Everton fans spilled out of the 52,769-capacity ground, word quickly spread of events unfolding at Molineux.

Bottom-of-the-table Wolves had stunned Liverpool 2-1 in a dramatic Premier League fixture, with Brazilian midfielder Andre scoring a last-gasp winner deep into stoppage time.

David Moyes (speaking to BBC Match of the Day):

“Back-to-back wins in the Premier League at the moment is hard for anybody. And it’s been difficult for us over the last month or two but certainly a really good win tonight. The win we got at Newcastle gave us confidence going into tonight’s game. I thought it showed in the way we played. I thought for long periods we dominated the ball. We maybe didn’t make as many chances as we’d like but in the end we got a couple of goals.”

On being close to the European places: “I want to be positive, and I want to believe and I want the players to believe. I have said to them right at the start, that should be what we aim for if we can try and do it. It’s getting closer. I’m not saying we can do it and I’m not saying we cannot. We’re not being talked about as a club that’s in relegation and falling away.”

On the home record question: “It was a good win and we deserved a victory in the end and we scored a couple of good goals to go with it. It wasn’t the biggest thing that bothered me at all. The question actually has been a bit boring over recent weeks because I think we’ve actually played quite well here and not won and that can happen in the Premier League.”

On Tarkowski’s goal: “He’s always getting stick from me due to the fact that he never scores. Tonight he got his goal and I think he’s smiling at me because I’m always on about it.”

On McNeil, Ndiaye, and Dewsbury-Hall: “Dwight’s performance at Newcastle was very good. He built on that and took that into tonight’s game, and we’re seeing a much-improved Ili and Gana after they come back from the Africa Cup of Nations, and also Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall improving greatly because he’s just beginning to get back to where he was before the hamstring injury.”

On Garner and O’Brien playing through illness: “Jimmy Garner and Jake O’Brien both had illness. It sounds like there’s a wee bit going around, at Newcastle where we’ve just come away from, and today as well so they’ve done great to play the game.”

On the bigger picture for the club: “I actually think he’s just beginning to get back to his best after AFCON. Him and Ili are just beginning to do a lot better than they were a month ago when they came back.”

Kiernan Dwesbury-Hall On Burnley win (quotes from TNT Sports) –

“I feel like I’m getting in to a nice rhythm. I am confident, I am feeling the best I have ever felt physically and football-wise.”

“I thought tonight we were really good – more like what we want to be at home: dominant and limiting our opponents to not many chances. It is a great reaction in the last four of five days to get back-to-back wins after two losses. It shows great character from the lads and puts us in a great position ahead of the run-in.

On Everton’s European dreams: “Look at the stadium, it is built for European nights. It is a massive club and that is one of the reasons why I wanted to come: to get the Club back in to the European places. I believed with the new project it was possible. We are in a good position and it is about doing the business for the rest of the season,” he continued.

On England selection: “Getting in to the England squad is a dream of mine. I know the competition is stacked, but I am having a really good season – it is probably the best season I have ever had in the Premier League. My main focus is getting in to Europe with this team. If we do that, it gives me a better chance internationally.”
