Fans Think Curtis Jones Sent Jamie Carragher A Message With Boxing Trashtalk Clip

Curtis Jones has found himself at the centre of another social-media storm, at a time when his own future is already under scrutiny.

The 25-year-old midfielder has endured a complicated season at Anfield.

He has remained involved under Arne Slot, but not always in his natural role or with the consistency he would have wanted.

Jones has been used across midfield and, more recently, even as a makeshift right-back, while reports have claimed Inter Milan are monitoring his situation as he enters the final year of his Liverpool contract.

Reports suggest that Liverpool value him at around £35 million, with Inter expected to renew their interest this summer.

That uncertainty has only added to the feeling that Jones’ Liverpool story is drifting into a delicate phase.

His name has extended beyond the pitch and onto Instagram, where every like, emoji, and story is now viewed through the lens of a possible transfer saga.

That was the case after Mohamed Salah’s explosive post about Liverpool’s season, in which the Egyptian criticised the club’s decline and called for a return to the “heavy metal” identity of the Jürgen Klopp era.

Jones was among the players seen engaging with Salah’s message, reportedly replying with a clapping emoji.

That response did not go unnoticed as Jamie Carragher later questioned the reaction, saying he thought it was “a bit strange” and describing such public support from players as “daft,” while also singling out Jones for comment.

Carragher made the comments on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, where Salah’s post and the reaction from Liverpool players were discussed.

Carragher added: “I think Curtis Jones commented on it, didn’t he? He put like a clapping emoji. I thought that was a bit strange. I thought, ‘Jesus, this is why we don’t play heavy metal football because of players a little bit like Curtis Jones in the squad.”

Carragher then went further, adding: “He takes six touches on the ball before he passes it. I thought, ‘Steady on, son; stay out of that one! Let Salah do whatever he wants to do. He’s leaving in a week.”

Many believed this to be unnecessary from Jamie, mentioning that there was no need to single out Curtis Jones.

The Liverpool midfielder, though, did not keep silent; he recently shared a short clip featuring notorious boxer Gervonta Davis on his Instagram story, which many believe to be in response to Carragher’s comments.

The video comes from the heated build-up to Gervonta Davis vs Rolando “Rolly” Romero, a fight that became widely known online because of the bad blood between the two boxers before they met in the ring.

Davis and Romero’s rivalry was fuelled by trash talk, tense face-offs and viral press-conference moments. Their fight eventually took place on May 28, 2022, at Barclays Center in New York, with Davis stopping Romero in the sixth round.

The clip Jones used appears to come from one of those press-conference face-off moments, with Davis and Romero standing close together during a heated exchange while people around them attempt to control the situation.

In the seven-second clip, Davis says: “be talking on Instagram, but when they see us in person, they don’t got the same reaction.” He then calls Romero a “pussy.”

Jones did not mention Carragher by name. He did not tag him, and he did not add a caption directly explaining who the clip was aimed at.

But because the story came after Carragher had publicly criticised him, fans quickly connected the timing of the post to the former Liverpool defender’s remarks.

The reason supporters interpreted it that way was that the clip’s message appeared to mirror the situation as they saw it: Carragher had criticised Jones publicly, while the Davis-Romero clip referred to people talking on Instagram but not having the same energy in person.

That made fans believe Jones may have been indirectly firing back.

Jones has since deleted the story, but that has only pushed the reaction further.

What started with a clapping emoji under Salah’s post has now turned into another Liverpool talking point, with Carragher’s criticism, Jones’ deleted Davis-Romero clip and the online reaction all feeding into the latest bit of drama around the midfielder.
