Yan Diomande is one of the hottest names in world football at the moment. Coming off a superb 2025/26 season with RB Leipzig and a strong World Cup with the Ivory Coast, the 19-year-old is now being pursued by some of the biggest clubs in Europe.
Strong reports claim the winger is on his way to joining Real Madrid, arguably the biggest and most storied club in the world, with the likes of PSG and Liverpool also having pushed hard for the youngster’s signature.
Before he became a global superstar, however, Diomande had a slightly unorthodox journey to professional football.
Born in Abidjan, the most populated city in the Ivory Coast, Diomande chose to go the United States as a teenager to pursue his dream. He joined the DME Academy in Florida in 2022, while also competing for Yulee High School.
During his time at the DME Academy, Diomande established himself as one of the best prospects in the country, regularly putting in incredible performances at youth tournaments.
He moved up the ranks and began playing for AS Frenzi, DME Academy’s affiliate semi-professional club, helping them win the 2023 United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) Premier Division. He was also recognized as DME Academy’s 2023 STARI Player of the Year.
During his time playing in the UPSL, which is the unofficial fourth division of club football in the United States, Diomande’s performances also earned him a memorable personal award.
After becoming the top scorer in the playoffs of the 2023 season, Yan Diomande was awarded a $1000 check.
His outstanding performances in the United States attracted plenty of interest from Europe, and soon after, Diomande was invited for a trial with Glasgow Rangers. Though things did not work out in Scotland, the winger eventually signed with Spanish club CD Leganes in 2024.
He went on to make his LaLiga debut the following year, and his raw talent was evident right from the get-go. Despite his best efforts, his first season ended in heartbreak, and Leganes were relegated to the Segunda Division.
However, he had impressed enough for RB Leipzig to take a chance on him, and they signed him for €20 million in July 2025. He truly hit the ground running in Germany, and has never looked back since. In the 2025/26 season, Diomande scored 12 goals and provided 9 assists, earning himself the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award.
Fast forward only three years from when he was awarded that $1000 check, Diomande now reportedly earns in excess of €30,000 at RB Leipzig, and that figure is likely going to be multiplied several times his much-anticipated transfer is confirmed this summer.
