The fate of Rodri’s professional career remains uncertain as multiple clubs continue to court the midfielder. However, his personal life might be on the brink of turning even more tumultuous after a recent image went viral.
The Manchester City man has been heavily linked with arch rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona throughout the summer. Both clubs are currently battling it out for the veteran’s signature given he has just one year left on his contract.
While the situation pans out, Rodri has been recovering from a minor back surgery he recently underwent. The 30-year-old is spending his rehabilitation time in Ibiza, alongside long-time girlfriend Laura Iglesias.
The duo have kept their relationship largely private. Barring a few public mentions from Rodri, Iglesias has stayed away from the spotlight and is rarely in attendance during his games.
Nevertheless, she was at the scene in New York when Rodri captained Spain to the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy. The midfielder also took home the golden ball for his individual contributions in the campaign.
However, during their ongoing vacation, Rodri seems to have committed a cardinal sin.
A photo of the couple shows them holding hands on the pier dressed in their best beach clothes. Iglesias is seen sporting a smile under her spectacled eyes, looking the other way as her boyfriend.
Contrastingly, Rodri’s gaze seems fixated somewhere else. He has been captured red-handed staring at another woman wearing a shiny copper-coloured bikini.
The image is pretty much an exact replica of the cult-classic distracted boyfriend meme. In fact, the similarities are almost uncanny.

For starters, the framing of the image is a near perfect match. Both Rodri and his partner’s backs are facing the camera, unlike the other woman in question.
The only difference is that Iglesias seems unaware of what’s going on in the scene, which only makes the image’s meme potential even better.

But what is more damning for Rodri is his expression. The City midfielder’s lips seem to be slightly pursed, as if he is whistling, much like the guy in the original meme.
Unfortunately for Rodri, his shenanigans could have just been a passiong moment. Instead, he was instead caught on the camera in broad daylight.

A section of fans tried to jokingly defend the midfielder by putting his actions down to a force of habit rather than malice following years of tutelage under Pep Guardiola. Afterall, being aware of all around you on the pitch is a criticial trait for any midfielder worth its salt, and one of the primary strengths of Rodri himself.

Fans did not take long to transpose the image into Rodri’s current transfer situation. For weeks, the 30-year-old seemed destined for Madrid, but Barcelona have reportedly swooped in late to steal the deal as the Merengues were caught dragging their feet.

The moment will certainly not go down well with Iglesias. She has been involved with Rodri since their university days in 2018.
Iglesias herself is a medical professional who was training to become a surgeon. She is yet to tie the knot with Rodri and the duo do not bear any children either.
Regardless, Rodri will hope his slated comeback to City’s training this week will help the steam blow past. The veteran is expected to be a part of Enzo Maresca’s team that takes on Arsenal in the season-opening FA Community Shield on August 16.
