The Inter Milan defender, still working his way back to full fitness after a permanent move from Tottenham this past August, was spotted riding a Lime bike through the city, dressed head to toe in black: a long black trench coat, black sunglasses, and his hair styled in long braids, an outfit striking enough that fans immediately compared him to Trinity from The Matrix, right down to the coat billowing behind him as he rode.

Footage of the sighting was shared online, with one fan account posting, “A young fan and his mother met Djed Spence yesterday while he was out riding a Lime bike,” alongside a clip of Spence stopping mid-ride to greet them on the street, seemingly happy to pause and take a photo despite the unusual setting for a chance fan encounter.

The look didn’t go unnoticed, and it spread quickly once the clips started circulating.

One reaction summed up the mood perfectly: “ZOOOWEEE MAMA IF I SAW DJED SPENCE OUTSIDE MY CAR LOOKIN LIKE THAT YOU’D NEED TO CALL THE AUTHORITIES,” a comment that captured just how far removed the outfit was from what anyone expects to see on a Lime bike weaving through London traffic.

Sharp-eyed fans also spotted a cameraman trailing him during the outing, suggesting the Lime bike ride may have doubled as content for something bigger rather than a spontaneous, unplanned errand.

Whether it was staged for a brand, a personal project, or simply captured for fun, the presence of a film crew added another layer of intrigue to what already looked like a scene pulled straight from a film set.

That suspicion lined up neatly with what came next.

Just a day later, Spence made his Burberry debut, attending the brand’s Summer 2027 show during London Fashion Week at Chelsea College of Arts on September 21, sitting front row alongside a genuinely stacked guest list that included Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly, rapper and actor Kano, Central Cee making his own runway debut, and stars like Tems, Jorja Smith, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The show, Daniel Lee’s second collection for the historic British house, unveiled summer versions of Burberry’s signature trench coat alongside a new range of accessories, fitting territory for a guest who’d just been photographed in a coat of his own days earlier.

Spence shared the moment himself on Instagram, posting about attending the show and marking it as a notable step into the fashion world alongside his football career.

For the occasion, he swapped the all-black Matrix look for something equally sharp but different in tone: a black shearling-trim jacket over a deep purple turtleneck, tailored black trousers, sunglasses, and a chain.

All of this style attention has come during an otherwise frustrating stretch for Spence on the pitch. He joined Inter from Tottenham in a permanent deal worth up to £29.9 million, or around €35 million with bonuses, but arrived in Milan carrying a muscular issue picked up during an impressive World Cup campaign with England, where he played a starring role in both right-back and left-back positions as the Three Lions finished third.

The injury meant he missed Inter’s opening six matches of the season, spending his early weeks at the club’s Appiano Gentile training center working through gym sessions before finally returning to the pitch for his first full training session on September 11.

On September 21, fan account Inter Xtra shared an update citing sources close to the club: “Djed Spence has FULLY RECOVERED and will return to full training with the team next Monday, when Inter regroup at Appiano,” accompanied by a photo of a beaming Spence in Inter colors.

He’s since progressed to training with the group again, though manager Cristian Chivu has confirmed he remains unavailable for matchday selection for now, with reports suggesting his competitive debut is being targeted for Inter’s clash with Parma at San Siro on October 10, right after the international break. Until then, it seems Spence’s most eye-catching appearances will keep happening off the pitch rather than on it.

Between the surprise Lime bike sighting and the Burberry front row appearance, it’s been a stretch defined far more by Spence’s wardrobe than anything on the pitch, a fitting subplot while he continues working toward finally making his long-awaited competitive debut for Inter.
