Cody Gakpo injury update, return date and Manchester City availability

Cody Gakpo, Liverpool

Cody Gakpo started the season strongly, with four goal contributions in five Premier League matches for Liverpool.

The 27-year-old left Anfield to join the Netherlands national team camp for their upcoming Nations League fixtures.

In the Nations League, the Dutch team are in a tough group, which includes Germany, Greece, and Serbia.

In the first match, Cody Gakpo scored in the dying moments of the game to secure a crucial point for the Dutch against Germany, as the match ended 1-1.

During the second match against Serbia, the Netherlands won 2-1, but Cody Gakpo was forced to leave early after a heavy tackle from Sasa Lukic around the 17th minute.

At first, it was expected that Cody Gakpo would be sidelined for several weeks due to an ankle injury to his left leg.

The 27-year-old winger withdrew from the Dutch national team and returned to Liverpool, where he underwent formal scans at the AXA Training Centre for medical assessment.

It is unclear how long Gakpo will be sidelined due to the ankle injury, but in some quarters it is believed that the injury is nothing serious.

Liverpool are due to face Manchester City on 11th October in their Premier League, and it remains to be seen whether Gakpo will be available to take part in the match.

Andoni Iraola recently provided an update on Gakpo’s injury and revealed that the club are working to find out if he will be able to recover in time for the Manchester City clash.

When asked about Gakpo’s injury, Iraola said: “I think Alex Isak and Cody Gakpo both have had to leave the national teams with injuries.”

“Now it’s a matter of if they are going to recover in time to help us in the next game or not. But right now they are both injured.”

Manchester City are currently at the top of the Premier League, and they are yet to drop points this season in the league, having won all the matches so far.

Liverpool might also assess their options depending on the severity of Gakpo’s injury, and could look to bring in reinforcements during the winter transfer window.

For now, Gakpo is still injured, and the club are monitoring his developments at the AXA Training Centre.

As per Liverpool.com, the Dutch midfielder could be out for several weeks and miss a crucial encounter against Manchester City, but it is expected that he might return to the team in late October.

However, according to The Standard, there is no fixed return date for Gakpo, as the club is still assessing his injury at their medical centre and is yet to provide an update.

Gakpo has not started training with the first team after returning to Liverpool, and due to his past injury record, Liverpool will be carefully monitoring all the developments before he returns to first-team action.

At Liverpool, Gakpo has frequently suffered multiple knocks, but nothing serious has happened so far which has sidelined him for several months.

Last term, the Dutch international missed only three games all season due to a muscle injury, and prior to that he only missed four games due to injury.

Liverpool will hope that Gakpo could once again make a quick return to the team, and help the club make a stroger push to climb up the Premier League table.
