Barcelona Reopening Bergvall Files: Pure Transfer Madness

Barcelona, Lucas Bergvall

Barcelona could revisit their interest in a young Tottenham midfielder after his limited Premier League involvement, although a recent contract extension makes any move difficult.

Under Hansi Flick, the Catalans have built their midfield around players who can retain possession, press aggressively, and move the ball forward quickly. Pedri controls the tempo, Gavi brings intensity, while Fermín López and Dani Olmo offer different options closer to goal. New signing Rodri adds experience and defensive cover, leaving little immediate need for another central midfielder.

Flick’s approach demands technical quality and quick decisions under pressure, but Barcelona must consider their academy prospects before spending heavily on another young player. Marc Bernal offers an internal option, and the club must protect opportunities for emerging talents as it manages its wider transfer budget.

That context helps explain the reported interest in Lucas Bergvall. According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Swedish midfielder has attracted attention from both Barcelona and Napoli after struggling to secure regular starts at Tottenham.

The 20-year-old reportedly considered leaving Spurs last summer but stayed after discussions with the club. He has since signed a new contract, strengthening Tottenham’s position in any potential negotiations. Napoli reportedly view a deal as difficult, while Barcelona could monitor his situation rather than pursue an immediate transfer.

Bergvall’s involvement in the 2026/27 Premier League campaign has remained limited. He has made four appearances, two starts, and 146 minutes, with no goals or assists and an 87 per cent passing completion rate. His new contract strengthens Tottenham’s hand, although neither a reliable transfer valuation nor his weekly wage has been established.

So, should Barcelona pursue Bergvall despite their midfield depth? Barcelona should keep monitoring the Swede, but a transfer would need a clear sporting purpose. His ability to carry the ball, pass through pressure and contribute across midfield could suit Flick’s system, particularly as the team balances possession with quick forward movement.

However, Pedri, Gavi, Fermín López and Dani Olmo already compete for central roles, while Bernal offers another option from within the club. Bergvall would need a defined role and a realistic route to regular minutes; otherwise, Barcelona could spend heavily on a player who faces the same problem at Camp Nou that he currently encounters in north London.

Tottenham have little reason to sell a player who recently committed his future to the club, especially if they expect him to earn more minutes as the season develops. A substantial fee would make negotiations harder for Barcelona, who must protect their finances and give their academy players room to progress.

Deco should therefore avoid a costly bidding contest unless Bergvall becomes available on favourable terms and Flick identifies a specific role for him. Barcelona already have considerable midfield depth, so the Swede would need to offer something the current squad lacks rather than simply add another talented name to the list.
