Throughout his incredibly successful career, Jonny Evans has always been a man of few words. He does his talking on the pitch, and he does it quite well as his trophy cabinet will suggest.

However, fans were left stunned at the way he spoke on his debut episode of Monday Night Football.
Monday Night Football is an incredibly popular Football show on Sky Sports where pundits like Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, and other guests analyze football. Johnny Evans appeared for the first time this week, and fans absolutely loved his performance.
Johnny Evans called curtains on his career in June 2025, hanging up his boots after a successful run that lasted 20 years.
He debuted in 2006 as an 18-year-old after coming through the ranks at Manchester United. He made 467 appearances playing for Manchester United, West Brom, and Leicester City, keeping more than 100 clean sheets, and winning 8 major club trophies.
The Monday Night Football was his first experience in media, as the Northern Irishman is working on his coaching badges. Interestingly, Jonny’s wife, Helen McConnell, works for Manchester United on MUTV as a presenter, anchor, and media personality.
Fans couldn’t heap enough praise on the classy defender who gave his expert opinions with equal grace and elegance.

Although he didn’t get off to a smooth start, Evans eventually adjusted well in his first appearance as a pundit.

More than 600 games at the top level and won the absolute lot and yet no airs or graces. Calm, humble and a complete Rolls Royce for @NorthernIreland – surely our greatest ever defender.
Many fans were impressed by the genuine insight he gave as he spoke from personal experience, having experienced playing at each end of the table.
Really enjoying Jonny Evans on tonight's #MNF – not least because he's an ex-United man and from the same island as me !

Informative, good insight there re: Xhaka/being an experienced player going from a high level to a "lower" team. @Carra23 pic.twitter.com/s7mmIyHTYe
The game chosen for Monday Night Football was Sundarland vs Everton, which ended up being a fast-paced, end-to-end 1-1 draw that fans enjoyed. However, the highlight was definitely Jonny Evans’ appearance.
Fans seemed to have enjoyed his appearance so much, some even want him to become a full-time fixture for MNF.
Jonny Evans, clearly a top class individual – get him on the tv to replace the likes of Dawson and Sherwood

Here are some of the most fascinating excerpts from his Monday Night Football –
- He talked about his time as an Academy graduate at Manchester United, how he had to move to Manchester at 15, and his parents were forced to relocate and find new jobs so that he can continue his career.
- Evans heaped praise on Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, talking about how pivotal and helpful they were to his development early on. He also mentioned his favorite partner was Rio and that he loved defending with Rio.
- When asked which manager stood out aside from Sir Alex Ferguson, Evans was full of praise for Louis Van Gaal. He stated that LVG was totally opposite to Sir Alex and that he opened Evans’ eyes to different ways of playing football while also acknowledging how much he learned from what LVG had to say.
- The best players he has ever seen were Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, as they were levels above everyone else. He felt that even though Manchester United had a lot of world-class players, the duo’s IQ was higher than everyone else’s.
- Recalled his favorite player was Roy Keane and that he loved playing under Keane when he was managing Sunderland. He also recalled a funny story where he wanted to return to Sunderland and he asked Gary Neville to talk to Sir Alex about it. Gary went to the gaffer’s office and returned back earlier than expected, telling him that the boss said he’s going nowhere. Evans then went on to play more than 30 games that season as Manchester United won the Premier League and League Cup double.
- When asked about his greatest moment, he answered that it was when Northern Ireland beat Ukraine at the Euros (2-0) in 2016.
- The one moment he wishes he could re-live was when he won the FA Cup with Leicester in 2021, but it was during the COVID era, so his family and friends weren’t able to attend
"This system for me doesn't feel right for Manchester United"@carra23 and Jonny Evans debate the strengths and weaknesses of Ruben Amorim's system 🎙️ pic.twitter.com/2dooLQ5ZW3

He also broke down Ruben Amorim’s system at Manchester United, talking about the strengths and weaknesses like an expert.
