The name Robert Lewandowski needs no introduction to football fanatics. The Polish striker has over 700 career goals to his name, no active player other than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi has as much.
The ripe age of 37, the prominent marksman seems to have drawn curtains on his European football chapter that has 32 trophies to his name, as he secured a move to the MLS this summer.
After four Successful years in Barcelona, where he won multiple league titles, cups and acquired the distinction of being one of only three players to score 100 or more goals for three different clubs, Lewandoski put pen to paper to sign for Chicago Fire, following the footsteps of prominent footballing names such as Ballon d’Or winner Hristo Stoichkov, World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger, and fellow UEFA Champions League winner Xherdan Shaqiri.
However, even before Lewandowski kicking a ball in Chicago Fire jersey, the meme trend has started follwing his move to the MLS side.
In a now viral social media post, Lewandowski was juxtaposed onto images of Chicago street figures, wearing tactical gear or flashing gang signs, usually accompanied by drill music. The caption read ‘Lewandowski at O’Block next season’.

For unversed, O’Block is the nickname for the Parkway Gardens apartment complex on the South Side of Chicago, around the 6400 block of South Martin Luther King Drive.
The infamous neighbourhood known for drill rappers such as Chief Keef, King Von, and Lil Durk’s ties with it, has also made headlines year on year for its notoriety with gang-related violence such shootings and killings a common sight of it.
In fact the local name, O’Block also comes due to one of its shooting incidents where Odee Perry, a young man of the locality, was killed early last decade and the locals chose to honor him.
The reason why the internet has added Lewandowski into it is because of his shooting (goalscoring) exploits in Europe.
Coming back to football, at the 2026 World Cup break, Chicago Fire are third in the Eastern Conference table with 26 points.
They return to action on July 16 vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the club are trying process Lewandowski’s P-1 Visa and paperwork so he can make his debut in that very match.
It would be interesting to see whether a veteran like Lewandowski at the fag end of his career can adapt and adjust and produce the goods for his new club.
