Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak has been one of the worst-kept secrets of the window. The Swedish striker has been Newcastle’s standout player, and with the Reds possibly in need of attacking cover in the summer, his name is always mentioned.
But Newcastle is not budging.
Newcastle Chief Executive Darren Eales was categorical in an interview with Daily Mail that the club has no plans to sell Isak anytime soon.
“We’re going to be clear – he (Isak) has multi years left. We will have the discussions in terms of a new deal,” Eales stated.
“They’re committed to the club. So, from that perspective, we’re not looking to move any player on.”
That’s as near to a “hands-off” as you can get.
Newcastle’s new tycoons have plans to compete with England’s top teams, and selling their star man to a direct rival would hardly be part of that agenda.
From Liverpool’s point of view, Isak is the perfect fit. He’s quick, technical, and can play anywhere in the front three. With Mohamed Salah’s long-term future uncertain and Darwin Núñez still inconsistent in front of goal, Isak may be a central piece in the Reds’ next attack evolution.
But prying him from Newcastle will cost big money. Having signed him from Real Sociedad for £63m in 2022, any transfer would probably require a fee of well over £150m—particularly with Premier League clubs not keen on selling to one another.
So, will the transfer take place?
As things stand, Newcastle’s stance is clear: Isak isn’t for sale. But if Liverpool really want him, and the player himself pushes for a move, things could change. Money talks, and the summer window is long.
For now, though, it looks like Liverpool will have to wait.
