Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have long had a history of fiery matches against each other in the Premier League. One of the memorable and famous matches was ‘The Battle of the Bridge’ back in 2016.
The latest encounter between the two London rivals was no different. Spurs hosted Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, with both clubs coming into this match with differing fortunes and results from their previous cup games. Chelsea came at the back of a 4-3 victory against Wolves in the EFL (Carabao) Cup. On the other hand, the Spurs boss Thomas Frank was under pressure as his side were knocked out from the same competition by the holders Newcastle United.
Chelsea got the better of their rivals in this game as Joao Pedro scored the lone goal in the 34th minute of the game, and could have scored a second in stoppage time, only to be denied by Spurs’ Italian Keeper Vicario, which would give Enzo Maresca’s side a valuable win, which would take them level on points with their opponents, up to 5th in the table, just a two-goal difference separating them from Tottenham, who are 4th. The Blues were clearly the better side offensively, and they could have won by more goals if only they had converted their shots on goal more often.
The match was expected to be a fiery contest between the two London rivals, and so it was, and it did not disappoint the fans in that regard.
One of the highlights of an altercation was the moment when the Spurs’ English International Djed Spence had a heated exchange with Chelsea’s Spaniard Marc Cucurella.
The moment occurred in the 78th minute of the match when Djed Spence tackled Enzo Fernandes from behind, which in fact riled up Fernandes’ teammate Cucurella.
Cucurella charged towards Spence, something the Spurs full-back did not take lying down.
Spence straight up went towards Cucurella aggressively, exclaiming, “What fam!”, in a way questioning Cucurella’s heated reaction to an incident in which he was not physically involved.
This Djed Spence reaction certainly shook up Cucurella and had the X (Twitter) in a frenzy with different types of fan reactions and comments on the incident.
