Turns Out Ruben Amorim and Diogo Dalot Are Related and Their Ancestor Was a Circus Legend

Diogo Dalot, Manchester United, Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim became the head coach of Manchester United in 2024. Diogo Dalot has been at United since 2018. Dalot has started in 39 out of 54 matches under Amorim at United.

Amorim has been under constant scrutiny as United manager, when his side got off to a poor start in the season 25/26. However, the Red Devils are on a 4-game unbeaten run currently, which also includes a victory against Liverpool at Anfield and sit in the 8th position in the Premier League with 17 points, just 2 points behind second-placed Man City.

Amorim had faced a lot of flak for not changing his formation when United were in a difficult situation in the league, at a time when they got knocked out of the EFL Cup by Grimsby. But has recently seemed to get the better of his players by sticking to his tactical formation.

However, recently, it is not the on-field performances that have got Amorim into the limelight. There is news coming out these days that Ruben Amorim and his United full-back Diogo Dalot, both of whom are Portuguese, are in fact related to each other.

According to The Sun, the Portuguese ancestral website Geneall stated that the duo are great-great-grandsons of Carlos Dallot, a 19th-century circus artist. The Sun further reports that Manchester United sources have confirmed the distant relation between the Portuguese pair Amorim and Dalot.

Who Was Carlos Dallot?

Carlos Dallot was born in France and, along with his siblings Jose and Julia, toured Europe before settling in Portugal, where they continued to perform. The Brazilian Journal on Presence Studies looks at the Harlequin Companies, which were popular tradition in the fairs of Lisbon, and how they are connected to Carlos Dallot.

In Lisbon, the fairs and their amusements were one of the most popular manifestations of popular culture during the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

The parades of the Harlequin stalls were so popular that many of these clowns would eventually become famous, thanks to the enthusiastic, hilarious, and noisy performances they gave to attract the audience to the show.

Joaquim Con-feiteiro and Taínha Charuteiro, ‘propagandists’ from the stalls of the Dallot brothers – two French brothers who worked in various circuses before setting up their own shack theaters – would be remembered long after the end of the famous fairs.

From 1866 on, the licensing applications for the Dallot brothers’ company – two French brothers who became veritable stars in the Lisbon fairs – became regular, as well as their presence at the fairs, particularly at the Amoreiras Fair, where they soon began to stand out among the other harlequin tents.

Diogo Dalot has previously confirmed that his surname has French origins and that the circus performers permanently relocated to Braga, where Dalot was born.

Amorim, 40, was born in Lisbon and spent the majority of his playing career in the Portugal capital with Belenenses and Benfica, but moved to Braga on loan in 2012, when he played against United in the UCL.
