Xavi Simons Turns Corner at Spurs with Form and Chas & Dave Nod

Tottenham Hotspur, Xavi Simons

The Premier League transfer window was looking like a disappointment for Tottenham Hotspur after missing out on Eberechi Eze, who moved to rivals Arsenal. However, Spurs signed the highly regarded Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons, whose arrival was met with great expectations among the Tottenham faithful.

Despite the signing, Spurs have largely disappointed and currently sit 14th in the Premier League. Their home form has been woeful, with only 2 wins from 12 league matches.

In contrast, Tottenham finished 4th in the Champions League league phase, securing direct qualification to the round of 16. Ironically, their home form in the Champions League has been immaculate, with 4 wins from 4 matches without conceding a single goal.

A major reason for the inconsistent form has been injuries to key players. This led club captain Cristian Romero to publicly lament the injury situation on Instagram.

The return of Dominic Solanke offered some relief, as the striker scored a brace in Spurs’ 2-2 comeback draw against Manchester City.

Simons himself endured a difficult adjustment to the Premier League and received criticism for lacklustre performances, along with a needless red card against Liverpool, which proved costly for Tottenham.

Since then, he has turned things around with 2 goals and 5 assists across all competitions, while impressing with his ball progression from midfield. His passion on the field has drawn comparisons from fans to legendary Dutch midfielders like Edgar Davids and Rafael van der Vaart.

Off the pitch, Simons has made efforts to delve into the club’s culture. A video of him exploring North London alongside club legends Ledley King and Michael Dawson had already gone down well with the fanbase.

Simons also assisted Solanke’s opener, which started the comeback against City.

As Simons began winning over his doubters, he shared a screenshot of him Googling pop duo Chas and Dave in his search bar as part of his latest Instagram dump.

The IG post also included a childhood photo of Simons wearing a Brazil badge while being carried by his mother, a humorous invitation to a table tennis tournament, and several casual snaps.

Fans appeared to enjoy the unfiltered nature of the posts, which stood out from the PR-approved posts typically shared by footballers.

Spurs fans flooded the replies and claimed him as one of their own. Seeing their star signing make the effort to embrace the club’s culture has only added to the goodwill around him.

Chas and Dave were a pop-rock duo formed by Chas Hodges and Dave Peacock, known for combining rock music with a London cockney style, humorous lyrics, and piano performances that resonated with the working class.

The duo were lifelong Tottenham supporters and proudly displayed their love for the club by producing songs celebrating Spurs and their triumphs.

Songs like “Ossie’s Dream”, about celebrating the 1981 FA Cup alongside club legend Osvaldo Ardiles, became instant hits. Footage of the entire squad singing along with Chas and Dave is still fondly remembered by fans.

“Ossie’s Dream” came as part of an album titled “Glory, Glory, Tottenham Hotspur” with 8 songs dedicated to the London club.

Reacting to Simons’ post, one user brought up a list he had previously shared outlining what Simons needed to do to be a “proper Tottenham”, and claimed that Simons listened to his instructions.

Some younger fans didn’t understand the significance of Chas and Dave, and were quickly given a history lesson by lifelong supporters.

Simons’ post may have provided an introduction to the duo for a new generation of Spurs fans.

With Simons putting in the effort both on and off the pitch, fans would be hopeful that he continues his recent form with performances that Chas and Dave would have been proud of.
