The United States are less than two weeks away from opening the 2026 World Cup on home soil, and every part of the buildup is starting to feel bigger. The games matter, the lineups matter, and even the pre-match gear is getting attention.
The USMNT began their final World Cup preparation run against Senegal in Charlotte, the first of their send-off friendlies before the tournament.
It was a useful test for Mauricio Pochettino’s team, and not just because of the result.
The U.S. started quickly, with Sergino Dest scoring early and Christian Pulisic making it 2-0 in the 20th minute.
Senegal pushed back through Sadio Mane, who scored before halftime and again after the break, but Folarin Balogun eventually found the winner in a 3-2 victory.
The U.S. will face Germany next before opening their World Cup campaign against Paraguay on June 12.
Before the match started, though, the USMNT had already created a talking point.
The players arrived wearing new pre-match pieces from the Virgil Abloh Archive x Nike Football “USA” collection.

The first piece that caught attention was the long-sleeve top from the Virgil Abloh Archive x Nike Football “USA” collection.
The America polo shirt was the lifestyle piece.
On the front, it had a white base, a blue collar, bold red and navy graphic blocks, “Football America” written across the chest, a custom red ‘ARCH’ Swoosh, and a large varsity-style “U” with stars around it.
Near the lower front, it also featured “United States of America National Football Team.”
On the back, the design continued with an arrow pointing upward, filled in American red, white and blue.
The pre-match top carried that same visual language onto the pitch.

It kept the graphic-heavy identity of the long-sleeve top but translated it into actual pre-match gear.
On the front, it featured a busier all-over red, white and blue graphic pattern, with the ‘ARCH’ Nike Swoosh and U.S. Soccer crest placed on the chest.
On the back, it featured “USA” written in large, stacked varsity-style letters, keeping the same bold American color scheme
The Virgil Abloh connection gives the collection its weight.
Abloh, who died in 2021, was the founder of Off-White, the men’s artistic director at Louis Vuitton, and one of the most influential designers of his generation.
His work with Nike often blurred sport, fashion and culture, especially through projects that reworked familiar athletic pieces into something more experimental.
Abloh previously worked with Nike on football-inspired designs, including Off-White x Nike boots and apparel around the 2018 World Cup.

Those pieces treated football gear as more than performance wear, and this USMNT collection follows a similar idea. It takes national-team clothing and pushes it closer to a fashion drop.
Fans had a mixed reaction these pieces.
Many simply loved the design, praising how bold and different it looked compared to typical USMNT gear.

Others thought the designs were too ugly, too loud, or too much like a lifestyle collection built around a national team. .
I am just gonna say it, the pre-match top doesn't have to say that it is a pre-match top https://t.co/TKn6KeWllY

The collection, however, is still unreleased, being expected to launch in the summer through Nike SNKRS, Nike’s limited-release platform, along with select retailers, Virgil Abloh Archive and USMNT channels, though final launch details have not been officially confirmed.
Early reports have placed the America Polo shirt at around $125, with the pre-match top and the rest of the pricing still to be confirmed.
For the USMNT, the timing perfectly fits the moment, generating hype and excitement not only for the World Cup but also for the merchandise that comes with it.
Their World Cup preparation began with a win over Senegal on the field, while the Virgil Abloh Archive x Nike collection added to the buildup off it.
As the tournament gets closer, the national team is not only trying to settle its identity as an elite National team, but also stepping into a home World Cup with a look designed to be noticed.
