Donald Trump Claims He Played Golf With Harry Kane But The Internet Isn’t So Sure

Heading into this summer’s World Cup, England were heavy favourites to go all the way. A key part of their chances of success this summer is their captain and star striker, Harry Kane.

Kane enjoyed a magnificent 2025/26 season with Bayern Munich, scoring 61 goals in all competitions to lead the Bavarian giants to Bundesliga and DFB Pokal triumphs, while they were knocked out in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League by eventual winners PSG.

Naturally, Kane was expected to score plenty of goals for his country at the World Cup, and he has lived up to the hype so far. He has six goals to his name so far, trailing only Lionel Messi (8), Kylian Mbappe (7) and Erling Haaland (7) in the Golden Boot charts.

While his performances on the field have been in line with what most fans and experts expected of him, a slightly more unexpected piece of news surrounding the England captain has been making waves of late.

Speaking from the White House on Monday about the reversal of Folarin Balogun’s red card before Belgium clash, US President Donald Trump namedropped the likes of Ronaldo, Kane and Messi to make his point about how the superstar players should always play in crunch matches.

Trump continued by praising Harry Kane’s quality, before revealing the pair had also enjoyed a round of golf together.

“I think Kane is a great player,” Trump said. “I played golf with him and I like him a lot. He’s a good golfer. He’s really great.”

This immediately sent fans on social media into overdrive, with many naturally wondering when the meeting between the two took place.

One fan on social media posted about Trump’s claims, claiming there is a possibility that Trump may be confusing Kane for Wayne Rooney, another legendary forward who has captained Enlgand in the past.

Towards the end of his career, Rooney spent a year and a half with MLS club D.C. United. During that stint, he met with Donald Trump at the Trump National Golf Club, which is located just outside the American capital.

Rooney was reportedly introduced to Donald Trump through his son, Barron, who is an avid football fan, and the pair ended up playing a few holes of golf to get to know each other better.

On an episode of “The Overlap” which was released in December 2025, Rooney opened up about his experience of playing golf with the US President.

“(He’d) asked me to give his son (Barron) football lessons,” Rooney said. “(Barron) said ‘Do you want to see my dad?’ He took me up into the Oval Office and then from there, his (personal assistant) was just texting — ’do you want to play a few holes (of golf?).

“There were about 50-100 golf buggies that were all security. There was a boat in the lake with snipers, there were snipers in the bushes, and I was like ‘What’s going on here?!’”

It is also possible that Trump may have been referring to an interaction with another famous British footballer who is also known to have a keen passion for golf, Gareth Bale. Before retiring from football, Bale spent one season with MLS outfit Los Angeles FC.

However, there is no credible source that confirms the two have ever shared a round of golf.

Of course, there is also a good chance that Harry Kane may have fit in a few hours of golf with Trump in his otherwise hectic schedule, seeing he has professed his love for the sport many times before.

While speculation about what Kane has been upto off the field will continue amongst fans, the English captain will be fully focused on the next challenge in store.

In the quarter-finals, the Three Lions face off against Norway, who are coming off the biggest win in their history, after beating Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16.

The Norwegians also have a lethal striker of their own in the form of Erling Haaland, and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top to seal qualification to the semi-finals.
