Robert Lewandowski opened his scoring account for Chicago Fire on his home debut for the club on Sunday. The Pole put two past Charlotte to earn the team a vital 2-1 victory and three points to go with it.
The 37-year-old’s effort means the Fire and now within a point of New England in third place in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference.
The performance earned Lewandowski the MLS Player of the Matchday honours. It was just his third appearance for the club, with the previous two ending in defeats to Inter Miami and New York City.
The game against Charlotte was previously scheduled for August 1 and meant to be Lewandowski’s debut. However, the fixture had to be delayed due to poor air quality from wildfire smoke.
All that meant Chicago returned to home soil for the first time since May 24, when they had signed off for the summer break by trumping Toronto 2-1.
On Sunday, over 30,000 fans were in attendance at Soldier Stadium to mark the comeback and see their team kitted in the classic red again. Lewandowski made sure they won’t forget the outing anytime soon, his goals stamped with the iconic arms spread out celebration.
Strangely, as a photo of Lewandowski celebrating his goal made the rounds on social media, fans claimed to be transported back in time and they certainly had a point.
The all-red shorts and shirt combo of Chicago with mere hints of white in it seemed like a throwback to the Barclays era gone by. It features no gimmicks or fancy patterns, just sober colours and neatly placed stripes on the peripheries for a minimialist look that would fit perfectly in a third-tier game in England.
Moreover, the kit design just felt at home on Lewandowski, who seems to embody the hardened league veteran look.

All that combined with muted pale pastel colours of the composition gave a perfect retro aesthetic. Not too far off from a photo of your average ageing Middlesbrough player slugging it out in the 2010s with the lion emblazoned on their chest.

Some fans brought the comparison even closer to home for Lewandowski with a callback to the FIFA 10 cover.
The North American edition of the game featured Mexican forward Cuauhtémoc Blanco, donning a very similar red Chicago jersey.

However, perhaps the root to all the nostalgia was seeing Lewandowski himself back in red, four years after his Bayern Munich exit. Lewandowski spent eight long years with the Bavarians, scripting history in their colours with nearly 350 goals.
The current shade of red contrasted with white and simplistic design the Fire use for their jerseys is very similar to what Bayern had in the early 2000s. However, soon after Lewandoski arrived in 2014, they switched to a darker hue and fancier patterns.
If Sunday’s match is anything to go by, it certainly seems present day Lewandowski is good enough to show up in America like he dominated Europe a decade ago. The two goals are just the beginning for the veteran in the twilight of his career, and many nostalgic trips down the memory lane await for fans.
