Hailing from Egypt and Morocco respectively, Mohamed Salah and Noussair Mazraoui are now regularly spotted at some of the biggest competitions in world football. Both players have quite a lot of Premier League and Champions League experience under their belt.
In addition to boasting similar professional experience, another aspect the pair have in common are that they are devout muslims. Both Salah and Mazraoui have often publicly spoken about the important role their faith plays in their day-to-day life on social media and in interviews.
Of recent, however, the pair have come under the spotlight for the wrong reasons.
On one hand, Mohamed Salah was called out by several supporters as clips of him enjoying his summer holidays in Mykonos, Greece, emerged on social media.

Many fans alleged that he was dressing inappropriately, and his choice of outfitM did not give line up with his otherwise pious demeanor.
“This guy, they say he’s a conservative Muslim, but the guy’s been vacationing on the LGBT island for a month,” a fan wrote.
“Turns out the prostration was just for show in the field,” another fan commented.
Keeping in mind that Salah is enjoying himself at a party in the video, a few other fans also alleged that the forward may have been drinking alcohol, which is strictly forbidden in the Islamic faith.
“I wish the best for all my akhs but there’s no way it’s just water in all those cups man,” another supporter replied.
“By God, an innocent question right now: Salah doesn’t drink, so what’s the point of him going to places like that?” another fan questioned.
While Mo Salah was catching flak for his choice of clothing and potentially consuming alcohol, Mazraoui, on the other hand, was called out for endorsing a sponsor that would be considered haram by the Muslim religious text, the Quran.
Beginning in the 2026/27 season, Manchester United have announced a training kit partnership with Betway, one of the biggest online gambling platforms in the world. The logo of the company is set to feature on the training attire of both the men’s and women’s teams.
In the Islamic faith, gambling is grouped with with intoxicants, calling it an abomination of Satan’s handiwork. Seen as a means of acquiring unearned wealth, gambling also has the potential to bring social and financial harm upon oneself, and hence believers are instructed to avoid it completely.
Despite this, however, Mazraoui was spotted endorsing Betway in an image the club uploaded from a training session on Tuesday.
Several fans brought up the fact that he had declined to wear a rainbow-themed warm-up jacket supporting the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces LGBTQ+ inclusion campaign, citing his Muslim faith, back in December 2024, and now sporting the Betway logo made him look hypocritical.
“Bros just homophobic, it had nothing to do with his religion. f***ing prick,” a fan wrote.
“Mazraoui once refused to wear a rainbow-themed Adidas jacket during warmups (with United then stopping all players wearing them) citing religious reasons, yet here he is happily wearing a shirt with a betting sponsor despite his religion forbidding betting. Interesting, that,” another fan commented.
“Mazraoui has no issue with the betting sponsor 🤔 hypocrite,” another supporter replied.
While Noussair Mazraoui appears to have no problem displaying a gambling company on his shirt, Amad Diallo is also a devout muslim, and it remains to be seen what his stance is on the training kits. It is still yet to be confirmed whether the players will eventually request exemptions from wearing the Betway-branded gear.
