Lionel Messi Irks Ronaldo Fans With GOAT Debate Settled Line In Michelob Ultra Ad

Lionel Messi has given football fans a lot to talk about after posting Michelob ULTRA’s “Tab Closed” advertisement on Instagram, a 60-second cinematic tribute that turns his incredible FIFA World Cup career into a massive bar receipt.

The commercial, created by Wieden+Kennedy New York, begins in a dark, atmospheric bar, where a bartender stands behind the counter with a bottle of Michelob ULTRA before a cash-register-style machine begins printing an unusually long receipt.

The commercial eventually begins in a bar, with Messi walking away from the pitch as the bartender inquires, “Closing out?” before the campaign delivers its unmistakable final verdict: “GOAT debate: settled.”

From there, the camera moves closer to the receipt as Messi’s World Cup journey is documented line by line, with his accomplishments presented as items on a restaurant bill.

The receipt shows all his stats in the world cup so far with appearing 34 FIFA World Cup matches, 23 wins, 3,054 minutes, 140 shots, 64 shots on goal, 12 assists, and 21 goals, with 17 left-footed goals, four right-footed goals, two free-kick goals, and four penalty goals. It then moves on to more specialized statistics, including 140 completed dribbles, 99 chances created, two FIFA World Cup Golden Balls, three World Cup finals, and one World Cup title, as well as 16 Michelob ULTRA Superior Player of the Match awards.

Instead of stopping at career totals, the receipt highlights some of Messi’s most memorable World Cup moments. It mentions him being the first player to score in every knockout round of a World Cup and recalls individual moments from various tournaments, such as his 90th-minute winner in 2014, an iconic dribble and assist against Switzerland, his first touch against Nigeria in 2018, and his crucial goal against Mexico in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which helped them win the title.

Previous tournaments are also covered, with entries such as his 2006 assist against Serbia and Montenegro in the 78th minute and his 2010 assist against Mexico in the 25th minute. As a result, the concept presents Messi’s six World Cup appearances as a catalog of individual memories that fans have held for years, rather than a collection of statistics.

The receipt eventually moves away from measurable football data and begins calculating Messi’s emotional impact, assigning the value “COUNTLESS” to things like fans in tears, people named Leo, personal hopes dashed, media meltdowns, and complaints filed.

The playful section also refers to Messi’s career’s tears, celebrations, shouts, and heartbreak, implying that there is no realistic number large enough to quantify his influence on football fans.

The final entries are even more direct, combining “Expectations” with “SHATTERED,” records with “REDEFINED,” the world with “INSPIRED,” and the GOAT debate with “SETTLED.”

Every statistic and achievement featured on the massive tab added authenticity to an advertisement with a deliberately playful premise.

The emotional instrumental track is set to a global montage featuring multilingual commentary from some of Messi’s most memorable matches.

Meanwhile, the provocative “GOAT debate: settled” line drew Ronaldo fans back into the conversation.

The post’s wording reignited Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s nearly two-decade rivalry, with fans once again comparing their achievements, international records, and major trophies.

As one fan reacted to this,

Honestly Messi probably can’t even read that, given he knows 0 English 😂😂😂

The disagreement stems partly from the wording itself: Messi did not personally write a caption declaring himself the greatest, but he did share the branded advertisement containing the statement, leaving fans to debate whether it was a playful marketing line or an indirect statement about his legacy.

And even some fans mocked this video telling it is rigged video for Messi,

That distinction has become part of the reaction itself, with some fans appreciating the cheekiness and others viewing the message as overly provocative.

That final line has inevitably reignited the long-running Messi-versus-Cristiano Ronaldo debate, with Messi supporters hailing the campaign as a fitting tribute, while rival fans have questioned the advertisement’s deliberately confident conclusion.

Critics also argue that turning his achievements into a giant receipt feels deliberately designed to overwhelm the audience with statistics while brushing aside arguments in favor of Cristiano Ronaldo and other all-time greats.

For them, the ad is clever marketing, but the “debate settled” claim is exactly what makes it provocative rather than definitive.

The commercial’s timing is especially significant because it comes as Messi prepares to retire from international competition after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After leading Argentina to another World Cup final, the 39-year-old watched his team lose 1-0 to Spain in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Michelob ULTRA’s campaign effectively mirrors that decision: after documenting goals, assists, records, trophies, memories, and emotions from six World Cups, the receipt eventually comes to an end.
