However, his linguistic expertise is not a marketing ploy or the result of a language app. It is the logical conclusion of a decade-long journey marked by enormous familial sacrifice and the protective guidance of a legendary national hero.
The reason he speaks Spanish so well is simple: he has spent more than half of his life living, studying, and playing professionally in Spain. His journey began on the South Korean reality television show Shoot Dori, where coach Yoo Sang-chul was impressed by his incredible spatial awareness.
Yoo, an iconic midfielder known for scoring the game-winning goal against Poland in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, recognized the six-year-old prodigy’s generational talent.
Knowing that a child with this kind of talent needed to grow by competing in Europe, Yoo strongly advised the young prodigy to travel to Spain and join an elite technical youth academy.
Taking this crucial advice, the ten-year-old football star flew to Europe for a trial with Valencia CF in 2011 and performed admirably. However, a significant impediment arose: FIFA’s strict Article 19 regulations expressly prohibit the international transfer of minor players under the age of eighteen unless their family relocates for strictly non-football related reasons.
To legitimately circumvent this rule and ensure their child’s dream, the Lee family uprooted their stable lives in South Korea and took a massive risk. Lee grew up completely immersed in local culture, attending school and living with Spanish-speaking teammates as a result of his family’s immigration. He spent more than a decade progressing through Valencia’s youth ranks before making his senior debut at seventeen, followed by two standout seasons at Mallorca.
Even during a three-year stint at Paris Saint-Germain under Spanish manager Luis Enrique, Lee maintained his sharp linguistic abilities.
