Dominik Szoboszlai finished the 2025-26 season as one of Liverpool’s most dependable performers under Arne Slot. The Hungarian midfielder made 49 appearances across all competitions, contributing eight goals and nine assists while cementing his place as a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield while the combination of his energy, creativity and tactical discipline helped the Reds remain competitive on multiple fronts throughout the campaign.

But the numbers only tell one part of the story. Szoboszlai’s value often came from the work done between the boxes: pressing opponents, carrying the ball through midfield and helping connect Liverpool’s defence with its attack.

At 25, he has evolved from an exciting signing into one of the first names on Liverpool’s teamsheet, making his influence on the side far greater than goals and assists alone might suggest. For the moment, however, it is not only his performances that have football fans talking.

Szoboszlai recently arrived at Hungary’s national team camp ahead of the international break wearing an outfit that quickly became a major talking point on social media. Posting photos with the caption “For the Nation,” the Liverpool midfielder was seen in an oversized blue striped shirt, wide-cut white shorts, black leather loafers and round-frame sunglasses.

The look immediately divided opinion among supporters. While some praised the confidence behind the outfit, others were left confused by the unusual combination.

Hungary had failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after a last-minute Troy Parrott goal for Ireland in November knocked them out of contention, meaning the June international window is filled with friendlies rather than competitive football, making Szoboszlai’s fashion choices the main story coming out of the camp.

The post soon attracted attention from several high-profile names and Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike was among the first to react, who jokingly commented, “Very small shoes brother.” The remark quickly became one of the most-liked responses under the post and was widely shared by supporters.

The exchange carried extra weight given Haaland’s involvement. Erling Haaland, who has named Szoboszlai his best friend in football since the two were teenage roommates at RB Salzburg, weighed in with his own reaction – a ‘hmmmmmmm’ along with couple of laughing crying emojis. The pair played 19 games together at Salzburg and have remained close despite playing for Premier League rivals since.

Darwin Nunez, whose own club situation has drawn significant attention this summer, simply posted “No comments.”

Nunez who left Liverpool for Al-Hilal last summer in a £46 million deal, was frozen out of the Saudi Pro League squad following Karim Benzema’s arrival in January and has now agreed to mutually terminate his contract, as both Chelsea and Newcastle are now been linked with the Uruguayan. Former Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa also responded, turning what began as a routine arrival post into one of the week’s most discussed social media moments.

For those familiar with Szoboszlai, the outfit was not entirely unexpected. The Hungary international has previously spoken about his preference for oversized clothing and relaxed fits, often favouring a more experimental style away from the pitch and his latest appearance simply brought that side of his personality to a much larger audience.

The international break will soon return the focus to football, where Szoboszlai remains a crucial player for both Liverpool and Hungary. Until then, one outfit has managed to achieve something few midfield performances ever do: Getting teammates, rivals and fans talking about the same thing, and nobody seemed able to look away.
