Stephen Ireland was never just another Premier League midfielder. To many Manchester City supporters, he was one of the most gifted homegrown talents in the club’s history.
He was a clever, technically sharp attacking midfielder who could glide between lines, arrive late in the box and make football look effortless. In 2008-09, he produced the season of his life, scoring 13 goals, giving 13 assists; he won City’s Player of the Year award and a PFA Young Player of the Year nomination.
He had earned the nickname “Superman”, tied to both his performances and his famous celebration that followed the winner against Sunderland in 2007.
Ireland joined Manchester City’s academy in 2001 from Cobh Ramblers as a teenager and broke into the first team in 2005. Before the Abu Dhabi takeover transformed City into a global powerhouse, Ireland was one of the club’s brightest sparks. He made 175 Premier League appearances for City, gathering 48 G/A before leaving for Aston Villa in 2010 as part of the James Milner swap deal. His later career took him to Newcastle, Stoke City and Bolton, before he retired in 2018.
He also represented the Republic of Ireland; however, he only won 6 caps before he was exiled from the team. In 2007, Ireland withdrew from the Republic squad before a Euro 2008 qualifier against the Czech Republic, initially citing the death of a grandmother. It was later discovered that his grandmother is still alive, leading to him admitting that he had lied.
The bizarre “Granny-gate” controversy became a defining footnote in a career that always seemed to contain both brilliance and turbulence.

Years after his retirement, Ireland joined Wythenshawe Vets to play in the Sunday League. The over-35s side has become a topic of discussion because it is not a normal veterans team. The lineup boasts over 1800 Premier League appearances, with a remarkable list of former Premier League names, including Joleon Lescott, Nedum Onuoha, Emile Heskey, Papiss Cisse, Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Valencia, Maynor Figueroa and George Boyd.
Ireland has been an integral part of this group, building a side on old dressing-room bonds, local football energy and the simple pull of still wanting to play.
Previously winning the Manchester FA Veterans cup 9-2 against East Manchester, the star-studded Wythenshawe team arrived confidently for the Cheshire Veterans Premier Division Cup final against South Liverpool.
Papiss Cisse scored a hat-trick, giving Wythenshawe a 3-0 lead in the first half. Later in that half, Stephen Ireland went into a 50-50 challenge, a routine battle for the ball, but the impact left him badly hurt. The impact was so loud that it could be heard all around the field.

The game was stopped almost immediately. Players gathered around, the crowd fell quiet, and attention shifted from the scoreline to the former Manchester City midfielder’s condition.
Ireland reportedly had to wait for an ambulance to arrive for almost 30 minutes before it arrived at Warrington Rylands’ Gorsey Lane, then took him to the hospital. It is understood that the match was abandoned.
Ireland was accompanied to the hospital by his wife, Jessica, who was left shaken after the injury.
Jessica Ireland thanked Wythenshawe FC fans, South Liverpool Vets, and Warrington Rylands for their care, describing the incident as a “really upsetting and shocking moment”.
Jessica also posted her own update on Instagram, sharing an emotional photo of herself holding Ireland’s hand as he lay in a hospital bed, still wearing his Wythenshawe shirt.
She wrote that she “wouldn’t usually do such a personal post” but wanted to update everyone who had been messaging to ask how Stephen was doing.
She also revealed that he suffered a double leg break; a broken tibia and a broken fibula, and had undergone surgery for the same. Ireland is now understood to be recovering well (Killen, 2026).
The football world offers its support to Ireland, from his Manchester City fans, to his teammates at Wythenshawe, they all hope that ‘Superman’ will return soon.
