Did Rashford Tell Antony He Is Never Coming Back To Man United? Here’s The Scoop

Antony, Barcelona, Manchester United, Marcus Rashford

When Marcus Rashford left Manchester United on loan last summer, the question was simple: could he rediscover himself away from Old Trafford?

Twelve months later, the answer is all over the statistics.

Fourteen goals. Fourteen assists. Forty-eight appearances.

A goal in El Clasico.

An important role in Barcelona‘s La Liga title win.

Hansi Flick publicly backing him and telling the board he wants to keep him.

Thomas Tuchel calling him back into England‘s plans ahead of the World Cup.

For a player who had been frozen out at United under Ruben Amorim and spent the second half of the previous season finding his feet again at Aston Villa, it has been a remarkable turnaround.

Rashford left United in July 2025, with Ruben Amorim in charge and the club still bruised from one of the worst league seasons in its modern history.

United had finished 15th in the Premier League with 42 points in 2024/25, closer to the bottom half than the Champions League places, and the mood around Old Trafford was one of frustration and uncertainty.

A move to Barcelona gave him something United could no longer provide: a fresh start, away from the constant noise that surrounds Old Trafford.

Rashford has not been shy about how he feels either.

He told ESPN “for sure” when asked if he wanted to stay in Spain, and called Barcelona the perfect environment to continue his career.

He has reportedly accepted a significant pay cut to agree personal terms on a new contract.

The desire is not in question.

Marcus Rashford did not feature in Barcelona’s most recent match against Real Betis, due to physical discomfort, missing a possible Camp Nou farewell.

Rashford was spotted pitchside afterwards sharing a brief, warm exchange with a familiar face: Antony, his former United teammate, now settled permanently at Betis after his own dramatic escape from Old Trafford.

Many fans on X suggested Rashford may have said, “I don’t want to go back anymore,” at the end of the exchange.

Looking at the video, it does appear as if he may have said something along those lines.

However, there is no clear audio or official communication that confirms this.

Antony’s story is also worth dwelling on.

He arrived at United from Ajax in 2022 for £82 million, carrying enormous expectations and a price tag that quickly became a millstone.

Twelve goals in 96 appearances.

At his lowest, he admitted he had considered retirement.

A loan to Betis in January 2025 changed everything.

He scored nine goals in 26 appearances, helped the club reach the Conference League final, and earned a recall to the Brazil squad.

By September, his permanent move was confirmed for €25 million, a fraction of what United paid, but a transfer both parties needed.

This season he has added eight more goals and six assists in La Liga, playing with the freedom and confidence that never came at Old Trafford.

Antony has openly spoken about rediscovering himself at Real Betis, saying that “the most important thing is to be happy” and that he is “very happy” at the club, while also explaining that he can show the football that first brought him to Europe.

In another interview, he went even further, saying he “found myself” and that moving to Betis was the best decision for him and his family.

Two players, one club that broke them both, now meeting in Spain, having rebuilt on their own terms.

The difference is that Antony’s situation was resolved.

Betis wanted him, found a way to make it work, and everyone moved on.

Rashford’s future is far messier.

Rashford has also spoken about life at Barcelona in far more positive terms.

He said he had adapted well to the club and city, felt warmly welcomed from the moment he arrived, and described Barcelona as the “perfect place and environment” to continue his journey.

He also framed the pressure there as the kind of pressure he wants as a player, rather than something negative.

Barcelona hold a €30 million purchase option but are reluctant to trigger it given their financial constraints.

United want their full asking price and have so far refused to extend the loan or renegotiate.

A Spanish outlet recently called the situation a “complete mystery,” with United unmoved despite Rashford accepting a pay cut and agreeing personal terms.

Aston Villa are monitoring closely, with Unai Emery keen on a reunion.

Rashford is caught between a club that revived him and a parent club that still holds all the cards.

The reunion with Antony was a warm moment; it was a reminder of how Spain can give careers a second life.

Whether Rashford gets to stay and enjoy his, remains to be seen.
