This highly anticipated friendly match against the Indonesia All Stars at Jakarta’s iconic Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium resulted in a 3-1 victory for Unai Emery.
Despite a positive scoreline due to great performance by the team, the focus of the match quickly shifted to the unusual jersey color change.

Jakarta’s intense tropical monsoon climate subjected the athletes to subtropical humidity levels ranging from 80% to 90%, as well as temperatures above 30°C. In this sweltering environment, the air is already so saturated with moisture that human sweat cannot effectively evaporate from the skin.
To compensate for the lack of evaporative cooling, the players began to sweat profusely, quickly soaking the engineered fabric of the jerseys.
The physics behind this dramatic color shift is based on an optical phenomenon known as refractive index matching and the suppression of light scatter. Under normal, dry conditions, a football jersey’s texturized synthetic fibers are interwoven with thousands of microscopic air pockets.

When ambient light strikes a dry shirt, the large difference between the refractive indexes of the air and the polyester fibers scatters the light rays erratically in multiple directions before reflecting back to the observer.
This diffuse scattering accentuates the surface pigment, giving the material the appearance of a rich, vibrant claret. However, when heavy perspiration completely inundates the shirt, water pushes out the trapped air and fills those microscopic gaps.
Because water’s refractive index is much closer to that of polyester, the physical barrier that normally causes light to bend and bounce is effectively eliminated. Light penetrates the wet yarn’s core rather than scattering off its outer surface.
Because claret is a deep, dark red dye, the absence of scattered surface light allows the base material to absorb nearly the entire visible light spectrum.

To television cameras and stadium spectators, this pure light absorption completely dulls the red hue, transforming the visual state of the 2026/27 Adidas jersey into an opaque, jet-black tone.
Kit experts have described the response as exceptionally severe and unprecedented for the brand, necessitating immediate logistical attention as the club prepares to leave Indonesia and continue its pre-season tour across Asia.
