Liverpool FC has been a shambles this season, as the club has failed to kick on in the second season of Arne Slot despite adding an array of high-profile stars to a Premier Leauge winning squad, the club languishes in mid-table.
Just when it seemed like Liverpool’s season was getting back on track, a dire New Year’s Day draw against Leeds and then another against Fulham on Sunday has plunged the Reds back into the land of uncertainty. All the momentum and goodwill the fans had gathered over the last few weeks immediately washed away.
The draws leaves the Reds 14 points off the league leaders Arsenal and 8 points behind 3rd-placed Manchester City.
With the January transfer window open, the attention has turned to the market. After spending almost £450 million in the summer, fans are eager to see if the club will be looking for new reinforcements to get the season on track.
One of the players who continues to be linked to Liverpool is Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace defender was close to signing for the Merseyside club in the summer, only for the deal to collapse at the eleventh hour.
While Liverpool are tipped to reignite their interest as they look to reinforce the struggling defence, it seems like one outspoken Liverpool fan does not want Guehi anywhere near Anfield.
Adam Smith, a popular YouTube personality and regular presenter on The Anfield Wrap, talked about the possible Marc Guehi to Liverpool deal. He stated that as a Liverpool fan, he does not want to sign Marc Guehi as “it is not right for the LGBTQ+ community”.
“I have made the point numerous times that I’m one of the few people seemingly that does not want us to sign Marc Guehi because I don’t think it’s right for the LGBTQ+ community to bring somebody in that has done what he has done previously without any kind of explanation about it. So signing another defender makes that less likely which I’m good with.”

Smith’s comments stem from an incident in December 2024, where Marc Guehi decided to express his Christian faith while supporting inclusivity as he wore the captain’s armband for the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign, but he wrote “Jesus Loves You” on it.
There was massive backlash as fans perceived it as a message of exclusion. However, Guehi released a statement and made it clear that he wrote that message to blend his faith with the campaign’s message and intended it as a message of love and inclusivity and not exclusion.

Liverpool is widely regarded as queer-friendly and a rather welcoming city for LGBTQ+ people, with several community groups, cultural initiatives, and visible spaces throughout the city.
In fact, the city has a recognized “Pride Quarter” centered on Stanley Street that is designated as the city’s gay quarter and features a number of LGBTQ+ bars, clubs, and venues.
The city also hosts events like Liverpool Loves You and the Pride in Liverpool march, bringing in thousands every year to celebrate their identity.
Similarly, Liverpool FC also has a long history of supporting LGBTQ+ inclusion, going as far back as 2012, as Liverpool was the first Premier League club to take part in its city’s Pride March.
In 2020, Liverpool FC started the Red Together campaign to champion equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Regardless of the city and club’s stance, Adam Smith’s words did not go well with online Liverpool supporters for having such an extreme take.
Many fans pointed out other players in the squad such as Cody Gakpo and Alisson Becker at the club, who have proudly displayed their Christian ideology, a faith where homosexuality is forbidden by God, but somehow has issues with Guehi for doing the same.
Similar to Guehi’s message, Cody Gakpo celebrated against Tottenham last year by removing his jersey to reveal an “I BELONG TO JESUS” message.
Guehi, whose contract is expiring in 6 months, has been attracting interest from Real Madrid after they dropped interest in Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté. A move to the Madrid side also happens to be Guehi’s first choice, as he states he will keep his options open and choose “the best fit” in the summer.
