The “GTA Prophecy” has gone viral on the internet, fueling an unbreakable belief that Manchester United will win the Premier League whenever a major, numbered Grand Theft Auto (GTA) game is released.
Football fans have noted a remarkable historical coincidence between Rockstar Games releases and the Red Devils’ domestic dominance.
Since the beginning of the gaming franchise, Manchester United has won the English Premier League in the same year as every single numbered GTA release: GTA 1 in 1997, GTA 2 in 1999, GTA 3 in 2001, GTA 4 in 2008, and GTA 5 in 2013, which also marked Sir Alex Ferguson’s final championship before retiring.
With GTA 6 set to release on November 19, 2026, the internet has resurrected the “scripted” theory in full force across social media platforms.
Based on the distribution of the 16 titles across Rockstar Games’ three Grand Theft Auto eras, the overlap with Manchester United’s league finishes results in an eye-catching timeline.
The 2D Era (1997–1999)
Manchester United enjoyed domestic success at the time the franchise was founded. Grand Theft Auto was released in 1997, just as Manchester United finished first in the Premier League.
The series returned in 1999 with two smaller releases, GTA: London 1969 and the free digital download GTA: London 1961, before Grand Theft Auto 2 was released later that year with an improved engine.
United finished first again, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League, completing the club’s historic treble.
The 3D Era (2001–2006)

Despite some minor version of games’ releases in which Manchester United failed to win the Premier League title, the game’s major year releases demonstrate why fans believe in such a prophecy, with the team winning major trophies and Premier League titles.
Fans are holding out hope that this unbreakable streak will magically lift Manchester United out of their post-Ferguson title drought and deliver them the 2026/27 Premier League trophy at the season’s end in May 2027, regardless of their current performance.
The season began with a reality check in Matchweek 1, when a poor performance resulted in a 2-0 away loss to Hull City, leaving United looking creatively starved and defensively vulnerable.
However, Matchweek 2 provided an emphatic comeback at Old Trafford. Despite falling behind to an early Ipswich Town goal, captain Bruno Fernandes delivered an absolute masterclass, scoring a spectacular equalizer and finishing the day with a hat-trick and an assist to lead United to a resounding 5-2 win.
