Photo – Frenkie de Jong relives ‘painful’ clash against Tottenham during YouTube live chat

The dark horse of last year’s Champions league were surely Ajax, surprising everyone as they went on to reach the semifinals of the competition.

Beating heavyweights like Real Madrid and Juventus on their way while playing an attractive brand of football, Ajax’s surprising run at the latter stages of the competition was one of the most exciting one in recent history.

Not surprisingly the squad contained plenty of young talents who were touted for big and bright things in their future and one of them was Frenkie de Jong.

After seeing him run the show from midfield at Ajax, Barcelona came calling and he secured a big money move to Catalunya last summer.

He is considered as a generational talent and expected to run the show at Barcelona for many years.

Frenkie gives a glimpse of his jersey collection

In a live video chat, Frenkie was asked if he has any jersey in his home in Amsterdam that he would like to show. He said he only had football tops of opponent players. One of them was Tottenham’s Brazilian winger Lucas Moura.

Now who could forget THAT semi final between Ajax and Tottenham in last year’s Champions League. That jersey might have brought some extremely painful memories for Frenkie that probably he would have buried in some distant corner.

Actually the top was from the first leg when Ajax went on to win 1-0 at Wembley stadium.

The second leg too started perfectly for Ajax as they scored in the first 5 minutes to take the lead, and added another in the 35th minute to take the aggregate scorecard to 3-0 at half time.

Ajax looked the favourites to advance into the finals for the first time after 1995 at halftime. But football has a funny way to remind us it’s not over until the final whistle.

Lucas Moura did exactly that as he scored two quickfire goals at 55th and 59th min to single handedly drag Tottenham out of the mud when they looked done and dusted and back into the match.

But they still needed one goal to win the tie on away goals. 90 minutes were over and the match was headed to extra time. Surely this was going to be the case of too close yet too far for Spurs.

But Lucas Moura had other plans as he came up clutch in the 96th minute to score and dump Ajax out of the Champions league.

No one could believe what had transpired right before them, but everything was real, although magical but surely real and Lucas Moura made it happen.

That moment pretty much secured Moura’s place in the heart of Spurs faithfuls forever as due to his heroics they reached the final of the competition for the very first time.

Photo – Marcos Llorente names his dog ‘Anfield’

Sometimes all it takes is one match to edge one’s name in the heart of the fans, and that game came when Atletico visited Liverpool in the round of 16 of the Champions League for Marcos Llorente.

Llorente entered the match in the second half, as Simeone was looking to add even more steel as he came in for Costa. No one could have predicted what was about to transpire.

Llorente who had played sparsely for the Atleti side since securing his move from the local rivals Real Madrid, went on to score two goals from outside the penalty area that every striker would be proud of.

First came after Adrian made a mistake and he pounced upon the gifted opportunity to tie the aggregate score and give Atletico the advantage on away goal.

He didn’t have to wait too long for the second as he applied a sublime finish from a ball from Morata to give Atleti the lead. If that wasn’t enough he also provided the assist which Morata buried to win the match along with the tie.

No one would have guessed a defensive midfielder would be the one taking the matters in his own hands and that too at Anfield and would be responsible for knocking the wind out of high flying Liverpool who were considered the favourites for the competition.

Safe to say that, that match was special for him and the Atleti fanbase.

We recently got a glimpse of how special it was when Llorente recently uploaded a pic on Instagram where it can be seen his dog has been named as Anfield’.

Image via Twitter

Apparently bored by the nothingness of the lockdown, he commented: “Anfield watching life go by”.

Sure to say, this isn’t gonna sit well with the Liverpool fans.

Belgian League officially ends season with leaders Club Bruges voted as Champions

Belgium just became the first country in Europe to draw the curtains on the 2019-20 league action as Belgian Pro League board has reportedly refused to wait any longer in calling off the footballing season for good.

According to the newspaper HLN, the decision from the board of directors was unanimous, and now only the endorsement from the general assembly awaits on April 15 which is expected to be just a formality.

The whole saga has resulted in Club Brugge being crowned the champions who had solidified their position at the top by amassing a healthy lead of 15 points from their nearest rivals with just one matchday left to play.

Club brugge being crowned the champions was a question of when not if. Interestingly this whole situation looks quite similar to the unresolved saga in England.

Premier League conundrum

Everyone was expecting Liverpool to walk away as Champions in the modern Premier League era for the first time in their history, but all such hopes were put to a screeching halt by the coronavirus pandemic.

Liverpool are runaway leaders of the Premier league table and it was just a matter of time till they were crowned champions, but then coronavirus happened. Premier league and quite frankly every other sporting league officials are in a spin on what’s the best next course of action.

You can’t chalk up a clear plan about a situation like this, which the whole world is experiencing for the first time. No one knows when the situation would turn to normal, or even become amiable enough to hold matches in an empty stadium without fans which also currently seems like a distant reality.

English top-flight chiefs are set to meet on Friday to discuss the next steps. It’s clearly not easy for anyone to decide what should be the next steps as no matter what you choose, you are guaranteed to upset a large section of people. But these are extraordinary times and at times like these, it sure requires some bold decisions to come from the top.

Photo – Mata roasts Matic in the comments, gets called as ‘insta bully’ by Rashford

Nemanja Matic uploaded a photo of working out from his home with the caption- “Everyday is gym day #stayhome”

This post was surely headed to be included in the extensive list of posts which footballers and athletes seemed to be posting since all the sporting action has come to a screeching halt due to the coronavirus pandemic, and you can’t really blame them.

Staying at home for consecutive days isn’t easy, but to use that time to work on your fitness so that you are at your best whenever the season starts seems like a pretty good thing to do in quarantine for a footballer and that’s what Matic seemed to be doing.

His United teammate Juan Mata clearly had other ideas and “seemed” to know the age old trick Matic was trying to pull off.

He clapped back at Matic and wrote “Get dressed and then go to the gym to take a photo and then all day on the sofa. Old trick Nema 😂”.

Mata’s  hysterical reply clearly had all of us in splits. Their United teammate Rashford also chirped in and thought Mata was being an “Insta bully”.

Juan Mata is clearly well liked among his colleagues and is generally known for his quiet and silent demeanour, but this clearly shows he knows how to pull someone’s leg too.

Well we all are clearly missing the action on the pitch, but exchanges like this makes us hooked in the action off the pitch as well.

Mesut Ozil reveals the goal he considers to be the best of his career

Mesut Ozil is one of the best playmakers that there is and when he is on song, he glides around the pitch blessing his fellow teammates with passes that only he can see.

Along with his ability to unlock defences, his goalscoring exploits generally goes under the radar. Recently he revealed the favourite goal of his career.

Yes, you guessed it right. He is talking about THAT goal he scored against Ludogorets.

We were blessed by this absolute brilliance piece of skill and pizzazz in the 87th min of the tie when Arsenal travelled to face Bulgarian side Ludogorets in the group stage in 2016.

Arsenal were considered overwhelming favourites coming into the tie after demolishing Ludogorets 6-0 at Emirates, but the tie didn’t pan out as the majority expected as the Gunners were down 2-0 after just 15 minutes.

Arsenal fought back and at the end of the first half, the tie was delicately poised at 2-2. In the dying minutes of the match, after some good defensive work from Giroud, the ball fell to Mohamed Elneny who released a through ball over the two centre-backs who were trying to maintain a high line, and who was chasing that ball – you guessed it right, Ozil.

He controlled the ball and charged forward, the keeper was out of his line to thwart him, but Ozil who was in sensational form that season remained composed.

He calmly chipped the onrushing keeper, faked as if he was about to shoot which completely sold the two centre halfs that had made ground.

They dived to stop the shot, but the shot never came, instead he dribbled the ball calmly past them to slot the ball in an open net.

No one could really believe what just happened, did Ozil really pull that off? He made a mockery of that Ludogorets defence and won that tie for Arsenal which ultimately took them to the last 16 stage of the Champions league.

His recent form has been a worry for the Arsenal faithfuls but Ozil belongs to a dying breed of playmakers that are hard to come by especially in the modern game. This goal is the reminder that when he is in the mood, his magic and brilliance with the ball at his feet is not to be questioned.

Tammy Abraham shoots down the rumor he was asking for £180k per week from Chelsea

The bulk of goalscoring ability and responsibility of leading the line for Chelsea had fallen on the shoulders of 22-year-old Tammy Abraham this season, and it’s safe to say he has exceeded everyone’s expectations, so much so that some fans even consider him to breakaway in the England squad.

Amid the recent transfer ban imposed on Chelsea, the youth system was finally called into action as many Chelsea youngsters were given the chance to prove themselves with the first team and safe to say, many of these kids have made the most out of their opportunity.

Blues have acted fast and have tied Reece James, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Billy Gilmour all for long term contracts at the club.

Even Hudson-Odoi who was rumoured to take his talents at Bayern this summer also committed his future at the club and is now reportedly earning £180,000-a-week.

But the same hasn’t happened with Tammy Abraham yet.

The future is currently uncertain for the Chelsea striker with reports suggesting that huge expectations in weekly salary continues to be a roadblock in the club agreeing a new deal with the striker.

The rumour spread far and wide among the Chelsea fans and needless to say they weren’t impressed, some were even outraged accusing him of even holding the club at ransom.

Much to the relief of the Chelsea fans though, Tammy Abraham himself came out on social media today to dismiss the ridiculous accusation put on him.

On an Instagram post stating that the allegations regarding the salary of the Chelsea no. 9 were a fake, Abraham commented “Finally some real news”.

Rubbish rumors aside and with two years left on his contract, Chelsea fans can again look forward towards a fruitful relationship with the striker when the football resumes again.

Photo – Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen shows off brand new hairstyle whilst in quarantine

No single event has brought down the entire world on its knees spontaneously like the outbreak of coronavirus. It has in some way impacted each and every aspect of our lives, and sportspersons are no exception.

People are leaving no stones unturned and rightly so to tackle the spread of deadly virus. It is rumored to believe that having no hair or less amount of hair on one’s head prevents the virus from spreading via exposed hair, and also makes it easier to put on and take off protective gear.

Taking this advice like fish to water, you may have seen people shaving their beard or even their head and footballers are following suit. Basically, in this case defence is the best form to attack ( right, Simeone 😉)

Recently Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen revealed a different hairstyle than his usual one, while in quarantine.

Fans were quick to point out the striking similarities between his new found look to Game of Thrones famous character Jamie Lannister.

Vertonghen also expressed his displeasure as some people were not taking government advice to remain indoors seriously with this tweet –

Vertonghen’s future is in the air since Mourinho took charge of the club, as the player who has till now featured heavily for the North London side has found playing time hard to come by this season.

His private life also took a hit recently when his family was held at knifepoint as four armed men burgled his home while he was on Champions League duty with Tottenham when they faced Leipzig.

Safe to say, this season has not turned out to be the ideal one for him, but he is a  seasoned player who ranks 11 on the Premier League appearances for the club, and has surely seen ups and down throughout his career.

Photo – Arsene Wenger rocks Arsenal merchandise while taking a walk in London amid COVID-19 outbreak

Arsene Wenger is one of the most respected men in the world of Football. He has been instrumental in revolutionizing English football, and his Arsenal teams of the 1990’s and 2000’s were the teams to beat. He is Arsenal’s most successful manager and he remained at the North London club for the best part of last two decades.

Recently, he was pictured strolling in London, during the coronavirus pandemic. He was wearing the navy blue shorts from Arsenal’s 2016-17 kit, which was the last time they won a trophy.

Wenger’s fashion sense has never been in question, as he has been one of the sharpest dressed men in Football. After retirement, and despite currently being aged 70, he can still rock a pair of shorts, while also showing where his allegiance lies.

And to top it off, he had also worn a cap, which had “Take It Easier” written on it. This was a message that could be effectively used in the current, coronavirus-hit world. It is important to note that Arsene Wenger is 70 years old, which makes him a part of the demographic that is the most affected by coronavirus.

He recently appeared in an educational video, alongside former Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino and other stars. The video was released by FIFA, regarding the precautionary measures that need to be taken in order to reduce the spread of the virus.

On Feb 19th, in an interview with Talksport, Wenger said that “I believe that the priority for the Premier League is to finish the season. That could mean pushing the fixtures back until the end of June, but they have to do that”.

Arsenal remains in contention to win the FA Cup this season. Wenger, even in his new role as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, would be rooting for the Gunners to bring their first piece of silverware post his retirement. Gunners fans would definitely be pleased to know that their former manager still has their back.

Video of Bruno Fernandes training in full kit with his daughter wins hearts of Man United fans

Bruno Fernandes has won the hearts of fans and pundits alike after taking the Premier league by storm, along with steadying the United ship as soon as he got there.

Manchester United look a completely different side now with him in the squad.

He recently uploaded a video in which he can be seen playing with his daughter in his garden wearing the full United kit.

Not to forget his daughter, who was also suited up in the home kit for the action that was about to pursue.

As if another cute video was necessary to prove what is already true – Man United fans truly love Bruno.

Interestingly this clip came just a day after Pogba was criticized by some section of United fans when he uploaded a video of himself training in a Juventus kit.

He clearly stated that it was in support of his French teammate Blaise Matuidi who recently tested positive for COVID-19.

But some fans believed he could have worn the French national kit to support him as he is heavily linked with a summer switch to the Old Lady this summer.

Robertson and Van Dijk issue hilarious claims when asked about their photo from Dundee United and Celtic days

Andy Robertson recently held a Q&A session on Twitter to make self isolation a bit more fun.

From revealing his choice of 3 players he did want to be quarantined with, which were one of the best left backs the game has ever seen, Brazilian Roberto Carlos, Celtic legend Henrik Larsson, and of course his current teammate James Milner.

He also had many interesting answers in store like claiming he has a better left foot than even his Liverpool  teammate Mohamed Salah (claiming even Salah would agree with this, hmmm I want to believe you Robbo but it’s kinda hard ), revealing Henrik Larsson to be his favourite player, and also revealing Thierry Henry and Steven Gerrard to be his PL idols growing up.

Interestingly one fan had a blast from the past pic of Robertson from his Dundee United days trying to win the ball against Celtic centre back and now current partner in defence Virgil van Dijk.

The fan asked if he and Virgil remembered this shot and who won the ball in that moment. To which Robbo claimed not only he won that ball, he had Virgil in his back pocket the whole game.

Interestingly Virgil replied and safe to say he clearly didn’t agree with his response. Check out how the Dutchman reacted below –

Jerome Boateng answers brilliantly when asked about his embarrassing moment with Lionel Messi

During any other season, a professional footballer at the highest level would be preparing himself to face the business end of the top competitions, but this has not turned out to be any other season, has it ?

So to keep himself busy, recently Bayern’s centre-back Boateng held a Q&A session on Twitter. From revealing the other 4 teammates in his 5-a-side dream team consisting of Ronaldo (Brazilian), Patrick Vieira, Messi and Zidane to praising Bayern’s upcoming sensation Alphonso Davies as a Tik Tok star, to revealing Ribery as the funniest teammate.

Q&A took an interesting turn when one fan tried to clown Boateng by reminding him when Messi produced a moment of magic to turn him inside out to leave him dusted and then chipped the ball over Neuer to give Barca the lead against Bayern in the crucial 1st leg of UCL 14-15 season.

That moment has been struck with Boateng forever and to his credit, he replied brilliantly –

Well to be fair, you really can’t fault the German in that moment as when the little magician is in the mood and decides to razzle-dazzle, what really can you do?

Jordan Henderson and Liverpool players hailed for their fantastic gesture to tackle the foodbank shortage

Governments of many countries have issued notices to avoid mass gathering due to the outbreak of convid-19 or commonly known as coronavirus.

Due to it, sporting events around the world are either getting postponed, cancelled or being held without the fans. We had never witnessed anything like this in recent times.

Premier League spurred into action when Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta tested positive for coronavirus, as it postponed the games and is scheduled to return on 4th April but that’s highly unlikely. It has led to a trickle down effect that is felt by the clubs, staff, players, fans and even the community in general.

Many people work behind the scenes during matchday and some of them work on contract basis, with matches being cancelled, they don’t know when is the next paycheck gonna come.

Also, fear of the virus has led to some people stockpiling supplies, leaving the less fortunate ones in the society even more exposed. Foodbanks, which are a non-profit, charitable organisation that distribute food to those who have difficulty purchasing enough to avoid hunger, were heavily dependent on match going fans to donate money or food. With matches being cancelled, they are bound to struggle.

In such trying times, it is necessary for the whole community to take care of each other and come together. Liverpool players have set an shining example in this regard by donating £40K to Fans Supporting Foodbanks.

A member of Fans Supporting Foodbanks said that Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson contacted him as the players wanted to help and have committed to covering all of the shortfalls that we will incur as a result of not being able to hold our usual match day collections. Earlier Aston Villa donated 850 staffed packed lunches and hot food to support homeless charities. Newcastle United also followed suit.

(Video) Fan footage captures Jan Oblak’s incredible speed to join the celebrations after Atletico’s 2nd goal at Anfield

Oblak produced a heroic performance against Liverpool as he made some outstanding saves and was rightly awarded Man of the match in his 50th UEFA Champions league outing.

The Slovenian proved to be a wall in front of goal as he and Atletico withstood everything that Liverpool had to throw and proved everyone why he is among the best if not the best goalkeeper in the world.

While his performance against Liverpool made the headlines for all the right reasons but what surprised many about him came from a clip a fan posted on Twitter.

The moment came when Llorente scored the second goal for Atleti, which practically killed the tie.

Oblak can be seen running from his end to the other to celebrate with his teammates as he covered the entire length of the pitch in just a few seconds and showed everyone he has plenty of pace to burn too.

Oblak is the highest rated goalkeeper in FIFA20, but his speed is 51.

To put it into context, Bayern’s Centre back Boateng has acceleration and sprint speed of 64 and 67 respectively compared to Oblak’s 43 and 60. After this clip, surely this doesn’t add up, right EA Sports ??

Erling Haaland’s arrogant Snapchat before the game might have been the reason PSG players mocked him all night long

As much as the fans enjoy and love the action on the pitch, it was the noise off the pitch that had the social media buzzing.

After defeating Dortmund by 2-0 and winning the tie by 3-2, and finally qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Champions league after losing at this stage in the last two seasons, surprisingly the talking point was the celebration of the PSG players.

PSG celebrated their win by doing Dortmund star Erling Haaland’s celebration from the first leg, which attracted some criticisms from fans and pundits alike.

Gary Lineker said that PSG players lacked class and some even called the behaviour childish. But what was the reason that prompted the PSG players to do this? Were they really childish? Was it just a celebration or a “response”?

Apparently Haaland had posted this on his Snapchat from his hotel room before the tie claiming, Paris- My city, not yours.

Naturally, this didn’t go down well with Neymar, Mbappe and stars of PSG as it reflected in the celebrations.

It didn’t just end there. There was more to come. As Mbappe went live on his Instagram and the players once again mocked Haaland by doing his celebration.

Neymar clapped back to Haaland’s Snapchat from his social media with a reply of his own.

Victory clearly meant a lot to the club and the players as they celebrated from the top tier of the Parc des Princes stadium with the thousands of fans waiting outside as the match was played in an empty stadium due to the threat of Coronavirus.

Haaland vs PSG surely had everyone divided, some feeling the celebrations was shithousery at its finest while others were of the view that it lacked professionalism, but I suppose we could all agree that this whole saga surely did present entertainment on and as well as off the pitch.
